Wawasee Cross Country Teams Advance To Semistate

DUNLAP — The Wawasee boys and girls cross country teams advanced out of Saturday’s Elkhart Central Regional at Ox Bow Park.
Needing to finish in the top five to move on to semistate, the Wawasee girls were third and the boys finished fifth.
The teams now move on to Saturday’s New Haven Semistate at Fort Wayne’s IPFW Sports Plex, beginning at 1 p.m.
In the girls race, Penn took home the regional title with 24 points, with other semistate-qualifying teams being Northridge (53), Wawasee (113), Concord (118) and Mishawaka (124).
Penn sophomore Maddie Woods was the individual champion with a time of 18:02, while Wawasee’s top finisher was junior Bre Robinson, who placed 14th in 20:11.
Northridge won the boys race with 56 points, followed by Penn (96), South Bend Riley (97), Goshen (106) and Wawasee (111).
Senior Jacob Timmons of South Bend Adams claimed the individual title in 16:10, while Wawasee senior Adam Doll (16:34) and junior Zach Cockrill (16:36) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

Whitko’s Brigit Nemitz had her cross country season come to a close at Saturday’s West Noble Regional. Competing as an individual, Nemitz needed to finish in the top 10 of girls that did not compete for a top five team, but she placed 14th in that category. Carroll won the regional with 50 points, and will be joined at the New Haven Semistate by Fort Wayne Dwenger (64), Homestead (95), Fort Wayne Concordia (101) and West Noble (126). The top runner at the meet was Fremont’s Abigail Hostetler, who won in 18:41, while Nemitz was 29th with a time of 20:23.
