Wawasee CC Team Blows By West Noble

SYRACUSE -ÊDuring the 1999 track season, Wawasee assistant track and head cross country coach Dave Stookey said that the 2000 cross country team was going to be good.
Really good.
And so far this season the team has proven him right. Thursday night the Warriors showed their dominance in a dual meet with West Noble with a 15-49 win.
"Time will tell how good we really are," said Stookey. "Saturday the Prairie Heights Invitational will be a good test for us. We'll be going up against some of the best teams in the state like Fort Wayne Northrop, Northfield and Wabash, so we'll find out where we are then. Right now it's just too early to say how good we are going to be.
"The potential is there, I think more potential than we have had in a long time. But it all depends on how I as a coach and they as runners put it all together."
Wawasee swept the first six places in the meet as Rob Chalfant placed first with a time of 17:12. He was followed by Flaco Perales (17:35), Ryan Stichter (17:37), Luke Stoffel (17:41), Eric Gingerich (18:14) and Curtis Farrell (18:33). The Warriors took eight of the top 10 spots as Matt Dunithan placed eighth and Simon Hernandez finished 10th.
"We had eight to 10 guys who ran really well tonight," said Stookey. "Rob headed up the pack, but everyone ran pretty well. We have the talent and the potential to be real deep."
Chalfant was running in just his second match of the season. He was out for the first three matches with an injury.
"I felt pretty good, but I can still feel it when I'm running," said Chalfant. "For the most part, I'm pretty pain-free. But I am a bit out of shape because of it, I'm not in the shape I want to be.
"I just don't want to come back too fast, I don't want to make myself worse. I'm working on getting back in shape right now."
"We're glad to see Rob come back from the injury," said Stookey.
In the girls' meet, Wawasee freshman Brittany Winchester placed first for the Warriors, but the Wawasee squad fell to West Noble 20-35. West Noble took second through sixth place to secure the win.
"Brittany Winchester surprised us tonight," said Stookey. "She has the potential to be a very good runner. She really showed that tonight. She ran very well for us."
The Wawasee boys are 5-0, and the girls are 3-2. The Warriors travel to LaGrange for Saturday's Prairie Heights Invitational.
