COLUMBIA CITY -ÊAfter winning their first postseason soccer game in the history of the program, the Wawasee Warriors knew they would have their work cut out for them no matter who they played. It so happened that they played a tough Fort Wayne Carroll team and fell 4-0 Saturday in Columbia City.

"We played about as well as we could against a good Carroll team," said Wawasee coach Paul Boyd. "A few mistakes on defense led to their (Carroll's) first three goals, but that's what a championship team does. They take advantage of mistakes."

Carroll scored its first goal of the evening when Jon Corwin assisted Rick Smith with 23:30 left in the first half. Then with 11:48, Corwin sent in another goal unassisted to put the Chargers up 2-0.

That would be the last score of the first half, and Carroll held a two-goal lead going into the final half of play.

Wawasee held Carroll scoreless for the first 19 minutes of the first half, but the Chargers broke the drought with 20:58 left in the game. Justin Dove connected with Corwin to give the Chargers a 3-0 advantage.

Carroll scored the final goal of the evening at the 9:53 point in the second half. Eric Miller scored on an assist from Smith to give the Carroll squad a 4-0 win.

"We held our own and played well," said Boyd. "We made some mental mistakes and missed some kicks, but I could not be more proud of this team. They made history.

"Jon Olson played a fantastic game. Alex Hernandez played at center-mid and played a fine game also. Ryan Anderson played back-up quarterback for the football team this year, and this is his first year at the goalie position. He's just a pure athlete who is quick and has good vision."

The Warriors finish the season 7-9-3.

"I can't knock what this team has done," said Boyd. "They gave it their all on the field, and I am very proud of them."
