SYRACUSE - After a furious start, Wawasee held off a late charge by Angola for a 65-53 win in boys basketball action Saturday night.

Warrior senior Michael Conrad scored seven of his game-high 19 points in the first quarter as Wawasee jumped out to a 17-4 lead after one period.

"That was a senior stepping up," said Wawasee head coach Phil Mishler. "A lot of times it takes someone to step up and hit that first shot for the team to get going and that's what Michael did. That's a senior knowing, 'it's my team' but also knowing when to let others step up."

Conrad and Co. also ratcheted up its defensive pressure as Angola struggled from the field in the early going.

The Hornets managed just 15 first-half points as they shot 7 of 17 from the field.

Wawasee pushed its lead to 19 points in the early part of the third quarter as it went on 9-3 run. Junior Andrew Mock began to find his range as he scored seven points in the third quarter including a circus shot late that went high off the glass and in late in the period.

Mock finished the contest with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting and 5 of 7 from the free throw line.

The Warriors headed into the fourth quarter with a 48-32 lead, but were pushed early and often by Angola as the Hornets got hot from beyond the three-point arc.

Angola drained five three-pointers in the fourth quarter to cut Wawasee's lead in half from 16 to eight.

The Hornets may have been able to close the gap even further, but a woeful 0-of-7 shooting performance from the free throw line kept Angola from drawing any closer.

Angola senior Brandon Talkington had a chance to cut the Warriors lead to six but missed the front end of a one-and-one with 2:19 left in regulation.

On the other end of the free throw spectrum, the Warriors went a perfect 10 of 10 from the line down the stretch to hold off the Hornets and overcome a lackluster offensive performance in the final quarter.

While the Warriors finished the game shooting more than 50 percent (19 of 37) from the field, they just hit two of five shots in the final eight minutes.

Part of that offensive downturn had to do with Wawasee playing ball control offense.

"(Angola) has three of their top four scorers back from last year's team and a great inside presence," said Mishler. "Angola is a better team than they showed in the early going. Even when we had that lead we didn't feel comfortable. We knew that could come back quickly and they showed that in the fourth quarter."

After a slow start, senior Zach Dygert led the Hornets with 15 points and six rebounds. Fellow upperclassmen Zach Burlingame dropped 13 while Andy Ameling came off the bench to score 10 for Angola.

For Wawasee, junior Lance Zimmerman provided a strong inside presence as he finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Starters Joe Leach and Brandon Geiger finished with four points each.

The Warriors only brought two players off the bench in John Adams and Barry Singrey. Adams provided a nice spark as he scored six points and grabbed six rebounds, while Singrey scored two points and had two boards.

The Warriors, 2-0 overall, are in action Saturday when they travel to East Noble for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
