Water Rates Rising

By Staff Report-

Warsaw and Winona Lake residents will see an increase in their water bills.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved a 9.9-percent rate increase in water rates for Indiana American Water customers.

The commission filed a request for increased rates on Dec. 5. The rate increase was approved by the commission following a 10-month review process that included public hearings and opportunities for public comment.

As of Oct. 10, an average residential residential customer using 6,000 gallons of water per month will see their water bill increase by approximately $2.49 per month to approximately $26.41.

The water rate increase is attributed to higher operating costs and investment in water system improvements, according to Chris Harrison, Indiana American Water network superintendent.

The company invested more than $89 million in water system improvements in Indiana from December 2003 to December 2006.

Improvements included upgrading water mains and replacing hydrants.

"We are committed to a program of ongoing system improvements to maintain quality water service delivery, support local economic development and help secure the future of water service in Warsaw and Winona Lake," Harrison said.
