Water Project On Schedule At Akron

AKRON - Akron's $1.8 million water project is proceding according to schedule.
Patrick Zaharako, Vince Sommers and Shannon McCleod, Commonwealth Engineers, attended Tuesday's council meeting with reports.
Zaharako gave an overview of the project, which will include a treatment plant, storage tank and installation of water mains.
McLeod advised the council on obtaining the necessary easements. Once the easements have been procurred and IDEM, INDOT, and Fire and Safety Building permits have been received, the council can ask the Department of Commerce to release the $500,000 grant money and issue construction contracts.
Construction is expected to begin in November and be completed in June 1998.
Sommers informed the council he had applied, on their behalf, for a water quality planning grant to conduct a study that will help the town solve potential problems from combined sewer overflows and storm water run-off to Town Lake. These overflows create a potential for water quality degradation of the lake. If the study shows the effect is significant, the town will investigate viable alternatives toward abating stormwater and combined sewer overflows. This will involve the potential for designing and building a constructed wetland. The results of the work done in Akron could be useful for other small communities attempting to find economical ways to solve local water quality problems.
The study would begin in November, with the final report furnished to IDEM in September 1998. The cost of the study is $28,500. If the grant is received, it would reduce the town's cost to $1,400. Sommers said word should be received on the grant status in August.
Glen Russell, Marcus Cable, told the council Channel 3 is available as a local access channel for the town. Deputy treasurer Jill Runkle was appointed to head a committee to write guidelines for the channel's use.
In other business, the council discussed plans for the town's July Fourth celebration. The Methodist Church parking lot will be designated for handicapped parking only during the parade on July 4. Traffic Assistance Personnel will direct traffic for the parade and fireworks if they have staff available. Parade applications are available at the clerk's office.
The next regular meeting will be at 7 p.m. July 15. [[In-content Ad]]
