Waste District Takes Look At 2006 Budget

The solid waste management district board reviewed the 2006 preliminary budget Tuesday.

The district is estimated to have a $227,000 operating balance next year, based on preliminary numbers.

Financial controller Sue Ann Mitchell said the assessed valuation was figured at $3.9 billion because farm ground values for taxing purposes have been reduced from $1,050 to $880 per acre. The 2005 AV was $4.5 billion.

She also said it would be two weeks before the County Option Income Tax or Economic Development Income Tax revenues can be figured.

The budget allows for a part-time office assistant.

The driveway and recycling station area on the west side of the building will be paved in August.

"People are trying to recycle, they just recycle the wrong things," Director Sue Studebaker said. She added that a fan blade was found in a plastics bin and a 20-gallon aquarium was found in a glass bin.

She believes signs detailing what can be recycled will keep unwanted items out of the recycling stations.

Acceptable items include cardboard boxes; newspapers with "slick" pages removed; paper food boxes with contents removed, junk mail, catalogs, magazines, phone books, typing paper, newspaper advertising inserts; No. 1 and No. 2 plastics with lids removed; glass food and beverage jars; and aluminum and steel food cans. The glass and metal cans should be rinsed.

In addition to the depot station in Warsaw at 220 S. Union St., other sites include stations behind Arthur's Market in Syracuse; south of Milford on Ind. 15; at the south edge of Leesburg on Ind. 15; behind the Mentone town hall, next to the railroad track; south of Ind. 14 and west of Ind. 15 in Silver Lake; and west of Lance's New Market in North Webster.

Depot hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month from March to October.

Recycling costs are: $2.75 per can of unusable latex paint; $10 for table top televisions and computer monitors; $15 for console televisions; $1.25 for car tires; $5 for truck tires; $15 for tractor tires.

The August meeting will include the citizens advisory committee.

The board also reviewed a favorable examination report from the State Board of Accounts for accounting from Jan. 1, 2003, to Dec. 31, 2004.

Board members are Brad Jackson, Ron Truex, George Clemens, Avis Gunter, David Delp and John Kinsey. Ernie Wiggins was absent. [[In-content Ad]]
