Waste District Reviews Recycling Site Plans

Solid waste board members Wednesday reviewed an inspection report about 214 and 220 S. Union St., Warsaw.
The board plans to use the buildings and grounds for drive-through recycling, hazardous household waste collection and to have more education space.
A block building sits on the "front" of the property with a Quonset hut at the "back."
The roof couldn't be visually inspected because of snow, according to a report presented by Housemaster Home Inspection Service of Fort Wayne.
The board has entered into a purchase agreement, in the amount of $200,000, to buy the property from Jerry Lee Buchan.
It was decided to find out about the roof's condition before the board proceeds with the purchase.
Board president Joe Thallemer asked each member to prepare a one- or two-sentence mission statement.
Avis Gunter asked the board to consider giving additional appropriations toward the county's dead animal composting site.
She said $5,000 was originally given to build the three concrete block bins and there is very little maintenance involved in the process.
County highway employees drop off the bodies of dogs and deer killed on the roads.
Creighton Brothers maintains the bins, turns them regularly, adds sawdust and uses the site for dead chicken disposal.
Thallemer asked that more information be brought to the board because it was his understanding the sawdust is free for Creighton Brothers and their employees are providing the labor because the company is using the facility and using the end product for fertilizer.
In other business:
• The board heard from Tara Stills of the city advisory committee, who advised the board that committee members set goals for the year, including helping small businesses recycle, continuing education, establishing a construction debris recycling program and observing Earth Day at the recycling stations.
• Director Marsha Eikenberry and education coordinator Sue Studebaker gave short reports.
Members of the county solid waste board include county commissioners Gunter, Brad Jackson and Ron Truex; Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins and city councilman Thallemer; Winona Lake councilman David Delp; and county councilman Morris Beer. [[In-content Ad]]
