The average American produces more than four pounds of waste every day, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

In an effort to inform and educate Kosciusko County on waste and recycling, the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District will join thousands of other recyclers across the country Nov. 14 in celebrating America Recycles Day. They will host a live remote broadcast with WAWC personalities at Marsh Supermarket parking lot from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The community will be able to drop off their America Recycles Day pledge cards and receive free gifts. The first 50 people to bring in their pledge cards will receive free T-shirts. Americans age 18 and over also will be eligible to win the "American Green Dream House" in a random drawing by submitting a pledge card. Many other prizes will also be available.

The pledge cards are available Nov. 7 to Nov. 13 at Marsh. Cards are also available by calling the SWMD at 372-3087 or toll free at 877-288-4304. Contest entry forms for the home are available through the SWMD at the Warsaw Wal-Mart store Nov. 13 from noon to 6 p.m., and at Marsh from Nov. 7 to Nov. 13, as well as at the event.

The event helps promote consumer awareness of completing the recycling loop through the purchase of products and packaging made from recycled-content materials. The event theme, "If you're not buying recycled, you're not really recycling," is designed to take recycling to the next step in the country.

SWMD Director Marsha Eikenberry said, "Buying recycled is easy to do, whether at the grocery store or at the office. Recycled products are everywhere."

"Buying recycled helps conserve resources, reduce waste and creates opportunity for economic development in our communities and across the nation," she said.

The first America Recycles Day was celebrated Nov. 15, 1997. More than 3,000 events were held in 50 states and in three U.S. territories.

America Recycles Day is organized by a public-private partnership. Official sponsors include the U.S. EPA, U.S. Postal Service, BFI, Home Depot, Remanufacturing Industries Council International, 100 Percent Recycled Paperboard Alliance, Steel Recycling Institute and the Union Camp Corp.
