Washington STEM Students Get Dental Examinations

By Staff Report-

Students at Washington STEM Academy received dental examinations from Drs. Michael E. Thomas and Charles Hassel and dental assistants Sydney Braun and Norma Hassel.
It was gratifying that many students had experienced regular six-month dental office visits and displayed cavity-free healthy mouths, according to a press release provided by Hassel.
Many students examined had never seen a dentist before. Some 8-year-old students had lost critically important chewing teeth designed to function to age 12. Loosing back baby teeth at 8 years old is a basic cause of adult dental devastation, the release states.
Registered nurse Randy Heinsman is dedicated to the health of his patients and scheduled this dental examination with praise to the children’s parents for their cooperation in making it a success, the release states.
Many local dentists who are members of the Kosciusko County Dental Association with their staff give time to screen the children, according to the release. Dr. Lena Fermback and her team work with Warsaw Community Schools head nurse Tracey Akers to match volunteers with each elementary school.
All of the school nurses and teachers in the Kosciusko County school systems have been a great support in improving the dental screening program, the release states. Previously, only the third-graders were screened. After seeing the need to start education and prevention sooner, it was expanded to kindergarten through third grade this year.[[In-content Ad]]
