GOSHEN - In the past two boys track sectionals, Troy Akers and his Warsaw team have seen both sides of the fence.

The grass truly is greener on the other side.

After a mishap in the final event a year ago left the Tigers six points shy of the title, Warsaw won the Goshen Sectional Thursday, edging Elkhart Memorial by six points.

"This is just incredible," Akers, in his fifth year with the Tigers, said. "This has been fun because we've got kids that can score in every event. I've been a track coach for 16 years and have been fortunate to have some excellent girls and boys teams, but I don't remember being this excited."

The Tigers, who last won a team title in 1998, won with a score of 127, followed by Elkhart Memorial (121), Elkhart Central (97), Concord (63), Wawasee (59), Fairfield (57), Jimtown (33), NorthWood (31), Goshen (19) and Northridge (17).

The top four teams or individuals, along with those who meet the state standard, advance to Thursday's regional at Fort Wayne Wayne.

Warsaw led Elkhart Memorial by a mere three points, 119-116, heading into the evening's final event. All the Tigers had to do was finish ahead of the Crimson Chargers in the 1600 relay and the title was theirs.

Seeded first, the Tiger foursome of Jon Dock, Brad Seiss, Grady Randall and Adam Sisson took second with a time of 3:25.72, while Elkhart Memorial finished fourth.

Akers called Sisson Warsaw's Superman Thursday night. The speedy junior was seeded eighth in the 100 but finished second, won the 400 in a time of 50.18 seconds and anchored the 1600 relay team that secured the team title.

"He had a fantastic night," Akers said. "He was like Superman tonight."

As has been the case all year, the field events were Warsaw's strong point. The Tigers scored 52 points in the five field events and held a 25-point advantage after 13 events.

Senior Jarod Leasure took first in the discus with a heave of 160-5, while classmate Ryan Brennan advanced with a fourth-place throw of 155-2.

Leasure's championship in the discus was the first for Warsaw since Karl Ottersberg accomplished the feat in 1984.

"We got the guys to settle down," Warsaw throwing coach Gary Fribley said. "We knew 159-10 was an automatic qualifier. We were either gonna get close or hit it. They were determined not to be below 150 feet tonight."

Junior Adam Bott took first in the long jump with a leap of 21-10, while teammate Arnell Frantz was fourth.

Other Tiger first-place finishes came from Sisson in the 400, Dock in the 800 and the 400 relay team of Ryan Hill, Seiss, Randall and Sisson.

In all, Warsaw took five firsts, three seconds, four thirds and four fourth-place finishes.

Wawasee and NorthWood finished the evening with one first-place finish each.

Warrior senior Jimmy Meyer took first in the shot put with a distance of 49-8. Warsaw's Brent Satterly took third with a throw of 47-6.

Scott Hill won the 100 for NorthWood, crossing the line in a time of 11.40 seconds.

Also advancing to the regional for NorthWood are Andrew Yoder, who took fourth in the 400 with a time of 50.97 seconds and the 400 relay team of Ben Lehman, Casey Yerger, Joe Sheets and Hill, who took second with a time of 44.03 seconds.

Also advancing to the regional for Wawasee are Paul Perales (third, 3200), Anthony Argentino (second, 110 hurdles), Rob Chalfant (fourth, 3200), the 400 relay team of Peter Chang, Travis Klenke, Kyle Johnson and Rhett Mikel (fourth) and the 3200 relay team of Eric Gingerich, Luke Stoffel, Perales and Chalfant (fourth).
