Warsaw's Cinderella Season Ends At Regional

KENDALLVILLE -ÊIf Warsaw girls golf coach Bob Turner could describe his team's season in one word it would be "Cinderella."

And that Cinderella team that advanced to the regional by one stroke and was seeded ninth going into the regional, almost took its glass slipper all the way to the state meet.

After placing third at the sectional with a score 10 strokes behind the first-place Columbia City team, the Tigers closed that gap Saturday at Noble Hawk Golf Course in Kendallville. Warsaw's 358 was just one stroke behind the Eagles and 15 strokes behind winner Homestead.

After nine holes, Warsaw was third with a 173. Only Homestead (157) and Dekalb (165) had better scores.

However, Columbia City turned in a better score on the back nine to slip into third place at the end of the regional.

"The girls were disappointed at the end of Saturday, as they were in contention until the last putt by Columbia City was made," said Turner. "Columbia City made a birdie-four to edge us by one."

When all was said and done in the team competition, the individual battle still raged. Bellmont's Tristin Geyer and Warsaw's Erin Elliot sat in a tie for third place with scores of 80. So the girls set off ina sudden-death playoff.

"Erin Elliot won in a 3-hole playoff with Tristin Geyer for a berth in the state finals," said Turner. "Both parred the first two holes, but then Erin won with a bogey five on the 18th hole under darkness.

"The 80 Erin shot was a career best for her."

After Elliot's 80, Katie Manning turned in an 85 for Warsaw. Abby Schori had a 94, while Dayna Ridderman shot a 99 and Katrina Bonahoom had a 103.

"The 358 by Warsaw was my best score by a team in postseason play," said Turner. These girls played with heart and grit. They didn't win a sectional or conference this year, but they are probably my best team in terms of what they had to give. They were 14-2 and never made many mistakes. They played within in themselves and their team attitude resulted in their success."

Last year, Warsaw missed the state finals by one stroke, and the awards ceremony after the match was full of tears. This year, however, the mood was a bit different when the final scores were tallied and the match was compete.

"As the awards were given out, the girls held their heads high with very few tears because they knew they had played with the best team in northern Indiana and almost pulled off the upset," said Turner. "Our success this year was shared by all, players, parents and the various golf courses that allowed us to practice upon. This is a season I will never forget."

The Tigers will graduate four seniors and three starters this season. Brenna Good, who was injured in a car accident and unable to play most of the season, Schori, Manning and Ridderman finished their high school golf career at the regional.

Elliott and Bonahoom should return to the squad next year, and Turner is already looking to the future.

"We graduated three starters last year," said Turner. "Next year we will just work on rebuilding."

Jarrett, ML Motorsports Fifth In Michigan ARCA Race

By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer

MARNE, Mich. - Without a doubt, 25-year-old Jason Jarrett and his Warsaw-based ML Motorsports stock car team would have been happy with a win in Saturday night's 200-lap ARCA race at Berlin Raceway.

In looking at the big picture, accomplishing crew chief Scott Eldridge's goal was the next best thing.

After a third-place finish last Sunday at Toledo Speedway, Eldridge made it clear his goal was to survive Berlin, meaning get through the last short-track race of the season and protect their second-place standing in the points.

Qualifying fifth and finishing fifth in the Pork The Other White Meat 200, originally scheduled for Aug. 25 but postponed because of rain, Team 67 accomplished those goals in Jarrett's first race at the half-mile oval in southern Michigan.

"Sometimes you just have to surive," Jarrett, whose father sat on the pole for Sunday's Winston Cup race, said. "It's not that we had a bad car, the car was probably better than me. This is a tough place to race. I thought it took more concentration than Daytona, you're constantly turning here."

Entering the race second in points with a 135-point lead over Pennsylvania driver Andy Belmont, Jarrett picked up five bonus points for qualifying in the fifth position. After Belmont's No. 1 Ford finished 23rd because of a late-race accident, and the ML Motorsports No. 67 entry came home in one piece, Jarrett holds a strong 230-point advantage over Belmont with three races remaining. With three seconds, two thirds, a fifth and an eighth in the last seven races, the third-generartion driver is steadily running away with Rookie of the Year honors.

Starting 32 3,400-pound stock cars on the Berlin Raceway surface Saturday night is like putting two loads of laundry in a single-load washer and leaving it on the spin cycle for two hours.

"Sometimes the spotter can't even tell you everything that's going on," Jarrett said. "This is a hard place to stay out of the way."

In all, six cautions slowed the race for 40 laps. The most serious of cautions came out with 39 laps remaing when Berlin veteran Vern Slagh went off the track to avoid hitting the turn 3 wall head on. Berlin Raceway has no wall on the backstretch, and ducking off the track and sliding through the bumpy field destroyed Slaghs' No. 65 Ford, once driven by NASCAR regular Ricky Rudd when sponsored by Tide.

Starting from the outside pole, three-time series champion Tim Steele, whose shop is three miles from the track, raced in front of fast qualifier and current points leader Frank Kimmel. As Walkerton youngster Chad Blount, another Berlin regular, closed in on Kimmel's No. 46 Chevy Steel began to pull away. Close behind, Jarrett, Slagh, Belmont and 16-year-old Indiana driver Shelby Howard battled for position.

Jarrett's No. 67 Pontiac, once the No. 22 of NASCAR veteran Ward Burton, ran in fourth position until it was passed by Belmont on lap 81. On lap 82 Howard gained a position, dropping Jarrett to sixth.

"We ran on the first set of tires for so long we didn't really get a chance to do anything with the second set," Jarrett said.

With a caution flag flying with less than 50 laps from the end, the leaders cycled through the first round of pit stops for fuel and tires.

Steele won the battle off pit road, trailed by Kimmel, Blount, Jarrett, Jeff Finley and Howard.

Back under green, Steele again pulled away and drove to his fourth victory of the season and 41st of his career. Steele led all 200 laps.

Right on Steele's bumper late in the race, Blount finished second, followed by Kimmel, Finley and Jarrett in the top five. Howard, Ron Cox, Todd Bowsher, A.J. Henriksen and Clay rounded out the top 10.

With his third-place finish, Kimmel wrapped up his third season championship in four years. Kimmel has 10 victories in 22 races this season. Trailing Kimmel's 6,225 points are Jarrett (5115), Belmont (4885), Cox (4415) and Norm Benning (4140).

Jarrett and the ML Motorsports team will be in action again Oct. 4 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.
