Warsaw's wrestling team opened its season Saturday by hosting a six-team super dual.

As a team, the Tigers came away undefeated with five victories on the day.

Individually, Warsaw's Anthony Boley and Kris Hueber went undefeated, and Hueber received the "Outstanding Wrestler" award, based on votes of the coaches.

Tippecanoe Valley went 1-4 and had a limited roster, falling three wrestlers short of a full fourteen-member team. Valley coach Scott Smith was pleased with his team's performance considering that in every round they had to give up as many as three forfeits.

"In head-to-head competition we really did quite well," said Smith.

Valley's Wes Ramsey went undefeated at 152 pounds, and the Viking team win came against Triton 42-33.

Triton came away with two individual champions, Justin Scott (103) and Errik Lemler (125). The team had one win, against Eastside.

Triton coach Sam Davis, who noted just a few mental lapses, felt good about the team's performance.

In the opening round, Warsaw defeated Tippecanoe Valley 63-15.

Valley gave up forfeits in the first two weight classes, and the Tigers won the next four matches to open up a 33-0 lead. Then at 140 pounds, the Vikings came up with their first win when Kevin Day defeated David Sumpter in a hard-fought 16-12 decision. Valley picked up only one more win, at 189 pounds, when Tyler Kottcamp pinned Tyler Miller.

In the remaining matches, the Tigers powered through with four more pins and a forfeit to rack up 63 points.

In the rest of the team match-ups the Tigers upended Triton 51-27, Eastside 48-25 and LaVille 46-36 before facing last year's champions, Kokomo.

Just before facing Kokomo, Warsaw coach Tony Boley told his wrestlers, "We need to do it one more time."

The Tigers did just that, winning 45-36.

"We have several individuals that have come a long way in a couple of years," coach Boley said.

Adam Bott (135) had just one win in his freshman year and 12 wins last year.

"Today," said coach Boley, "he was up by a 9-3 score when he got caught and pinned, or he would have been the undefeated champion."

John Milton (145), coming off an injury, posted a 3-2 record, that included a heartbreaking overtime loss.

Four Warsaw freshmen stepped into the varsity ranks. Robert Raymer (103) got his first win when he pinned Keith Jacoby of LaVille in 5:05. Phil Anuta (112) suffered three tough losses. Brandon Cordell (140) met some solid seniors, but he was aggressive and kept attacking, ending the day at 2-2.

Coach Boley was impressed with his son, Kyle, a freshman, who went 4-1, recording all wins on pins.

Tyler Miller (189) looked good according to coach Boley, who said, "We just need to fix a few things, and I believe he is going to help us."

Richard Wolfe (171) had an excellent day, with four wins, all by fall. His only loss was to Kokomo's Terry Coy, who had been beaten by two of Wolfe's earlier victims.

"Wolfe just made a mistake and could not recover, winding up pinned," said coach Boley.

David Ferguson (275) moved into the varsity role for the first time this year with a powerful start, going 4-1, with all of his wins coming by fall.
