July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
GOSHEN - Warsaw's wrestling team improved its Northern Lakes Conference wrestling record to 5-1 with a 38-27 Thursday win over Goshen.
Opening with three straight losses could have been a real setback for the Tigers, but the tide turned when Tanner Connealy (125) won an 11-5 major decision.
This began a string of five wins for Warsaw that put the Tigers back in control.
Warsaw's Robert Raymer (103) and Philip Anuta (112) were each pinned in 50 seconds. Raymer was the victim of a cradle, and Anuta was tied up in a figure-four headlock.
When Anthony Boley (119) lost 8-5 to Tom Skinner, the team appeared to be on its heels.
"Anthony usually comes through with a win," coach Tony Boley said, "and I thought his loss might have been a let down for the team, but instead his teammates picked up."
In the next five weight classes, the Tigers rumbled through with five straight wins. Connealy notched his major decision and then Kyle Boley (130) collected a quick fall in just 30 seconds. Adam Bott (135) followed suit with a key victory by fall in 2:19.
After an even battle through two periods, John Milton (140) was ahead by a 2-1 score. However, in the third period, his superior conditioning showed up, and the Tiger pounded out nine points to record an 11-5 victory.
Freshman Brandon Cordell (145) demonstrated great potential and showed well-developed ability in a very difficult weight class. Cordell burst out of a 5-5 tie in the third period and out-scored Goshen senior Greg Mueller 14-8.
Warsaw's Nick McKinley was stretched out in a banana split and pinned in 59 seconds. Nate Milton (160) spent nearly the entire match on his feet battling Quinn Hunter for hand control, but Hunter won in overtime 4-2. Richard Wolfe (171) gave the Tigers four team points when he earned an 11-3 major decision.
Tyler Miller came out on the short end in his 4-2 loss. Warsaw won the final two matches on first-period falls. Kris Hueber's victory came at 1:57, and David Ferguson grabbed his pin in 51 seconds.
"It has been quite a long time since we have beaten Goshen," said Tony Boley.
Goshen is 14-8 overall and 3-3 in the NLC.
In junior varsity competition, the Tigers came through with six wins on the mat. Chris Riley took a 6-5 decision, and five other wrestlers pinned their opponents: Matt Palladino (5:12), Travis Pherigo (3:51), Ryan Walenga (5:42), Julio Reyes (52 seconds) and Zach Smith (1:37).
The JV team travels Saturday to the Plymouth JV Invitational.
