VALPARAISO - Warsaw's varsity wrestling team swept the field at the Valparaiso Superduals Saturday, coming away with five victories against no losses.

Clutch performances from underclassmen were critical contributions to the team's perfect record.[[In-content Ad]]"We needed wins from our younger guys to provide support to the veterans," said first-year Warsaw coach Justin Smith.

Smith pointed out Bryce Barrus, Trevor Burgess, Zac Erba, Ross Hoover and Kyle Duzon as individuals who provided some of those important wins.

Five of the Tigers notched five victories on the day, including freshman Jarred Brooks (103 pounds) and sophomore Ross Hoover (171), along with junior Paul Manbu (135) and seniors Justin Brooks (119) and Adam Keener (152).

Jarred Brooks scored five pins in five appearances, every one of them in the first period.

Hoover pinned all three opponents he faced, in addition to being awarded a pair of forfeits.

Manbu had five victories on the mat, including four falls and a hard-fought 10-7 victory over Michigan City's Chris Felske.

Justin Brooks and Keener each won every battle on the mat by fall, in addition to receiving a forfeit apiece. The elder Brooks amassed sixty-five points on the day en route to his pins, while Keener scored one of his falls in just 13 seconds.

The Tigers first defeated South Bend Adams by a score of 46-30. In addition to the victories by the veterans, underclassmen helped the cause. Erba (160) racked up a 12-1 major decision over Alex Skipper. Duzon (112) was down 8-4 but came from behind to pin Julian Palmer in

Next, the Warsaw team obliterated Boone Grove 72-12. Here the cause was helped with pins earned by Demarcus Gibson (130), Erba, and Barrus (215).

Against the host Valparaiso Vikings , the Tigers had a tense battle, coming out on top 42-34.

Key underclassmen victories came from Duzan and Jordan Horney (125), each of whom notched first-period falls.

The outcome was not decided until the final match, which featured Hoover at 171 pounds against senior Cory Whicar. Hoover squirmed out of a pinning combination in the first period and was behind 4-3.

In period two, he almost came back to pin the Viking, but soon found himself on his back. Hoover then spent more than a minute and a half on his back fighting off a pin, and the score stood at 9-6. In the final stanza, though, Hoover locked in a cradle and scored a fall in the final minute to seal the team win.

The match against Michigan City was every bit as close, and opened with a contribution from underclassman Barrus (215), who earned 12-8 win. The team victory was again nailed down by Hoover, who fought from behind for another exciting win, bundling up Jeremy Harris in 2:42.

Even though the outcome was settled, Jeff Perkey (189) came out and fought hard through his entire match, losing to Conner Pahs, 10-3. The final team score was 42-33, in favor of Warsaw.

As a final dessert course, the Tigers chewed up and spit out Gary Westside 78-6. Ryan Lowe (130) had his shot and quickly nailed Lovie Grace in 21 seconds. Trevor Burgess (189) joined the feast, crunching Walter Ford in 1:28 and then Barrus also recorded a first-period fall.

"Everyone wrestled very well and worked hard," said Smith. "The team just came together. A coach can't ask for anything more."

"I'm just extremely proud of this group," Smith added. "I'm so proud of this group."

Warsaw is now 10-1 on the season and 0-1 in Northern Lakes Conference competition. Thursday will be the final opportunity to see the team at home, as the Tigers face NLC foe Plymouth at 6:45 p.m. in the Tiger Den. The remainder of the season will be on the road.
