Warsaw Wrestlers Suffer Third NLC Loss
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Warsaw's wrestling team hosted Goshen Wednesday evening and suffered a third Northern Lakes Conference loss, falling 45-27.
The Tigers won half the battles on the mat, but it was not enough as they were still out-pointed 33-27 before handing over two forfeits.
"We certainly did better tonight, I thought we battled a little better and at least we fought," said Warsaw head coach Tony Boley, recalling Tuesday's loss at NLC foe Northridge. "Tuesday we were so flat, but we were more aggressive this evening."
Boley went on to note the need for improvement from the down position, saying, "We just were not moving."
The Tigers also have a number of underclassmen wrestling on the varsity team.
"We have quite a few freshmen who have been thrown into the varsity level," said Boley.
Three of the six freshmen suffered losses.
Steven Palladino (112 pounds) was pinned by Goshen's Zac Bechtel, a junior, in 2:35.
Josh Flannery (119) fell to Jake Blosser in 44 seconds and Jerry Belcher (125) was taken down five times, the victim of a 12-4 major decision.
Adam Keener (140) was a freshman winner for the Tigers, but missed several opportunities to seal off a fall in his 15-10 win over Justin Hernandez. The Goshen senior had been moved up from 135 and scored the opening takedown when Keener slipped on a drag.
Keener countered and went up 11-2 with two reversals and three near falls. Then Keener slipped on a pinning combination and found himself reversed and nearly pinned before wriggling free. Keener scored a takedown in the final period and was again reversed as he worked for the fall but regained control to hold onto his victory.
Taylor Julian (189), another freshman starter, overpowered Goshen's Jared Nesbitt in a 9-2 win. Nesbitt's only score was on a reversal at the second-period buzzer, and Julian had him on his back twice but could not finish to the fall, settling instead for a 9-2 victory.
The other freshman victory went to Justin Brooks (103), who quickly clobbered Cord Schmucker. Brooks nailed two quick takedowns before nailing the Goshen freshman to the mat in 1:08.
Sophomore standout Matt Elvidge (135) was all business when he stepped onto the mat, scoring a takedown, a nearfall, and two more takedowns before dispatching Nathan Abbs in just 58 seconds.
Tom Lowe (171) also recorded a fall in opening period, upending Josh Jones in 1:32.
Andy Keener (145) nabbed the opening takedown but was only able to hold on through two periods of control. He could not get out from the bottom in the third period. The outcome was a slim 2-0 victory over Aaron Nesbitt.
Nick Missos (130) was tossed to the mat with a headlock by Goshen's Braden Barkes in 38 seconds.
Blake Deaton (160) was crunched in a 17-0 drubbing by Mark Oberlin, who scored the tech fall on the strength of two takedowns and four nearfalls.
Goshen is now 13-5 overall and 6-1 in the NLC. The Redskins host their own invitational tournament Saturday.
The Tigers fell to 3-3 in the NLC and 11-8 overall. Upcoming for the varsity Tigers is senior night Tuesday against Concord in the Career Center Gym.
