Warsaw opened the new wrestling season with two wins against three losses in the Tiger Invitational Wrestling Classic on Saturday.

Kokomo won the team competition with a 5-0 record, followed by LaVille, 4-1, Eastside 3-2, Warsaw 2-3, Triton 1-4, and Tippecanoe Valley 0-5.

Three Warsaw wrestlers finished the day with no losses- Chris Elvidge (135 pounds), Troy Miller (171), and Jacob Boots (275). Boots, a senior was also named outstanding wrestler of the event, sharing the honor with LaVille's Joe Urednick.

Warsaw vs. Triton

In the first round Warsaw defeated Triton by a score of 43-35. After handing Triton six points on a forfeit at 140 pounds, the Tigers won four in a row. Robert Raymer (145), Blake Deaton (152), Joel Perry (160), and Troy Miller each notched a win to give the Tigers a 22-6 lead. The Tigers gave up another forfeit at 189, and senior rookie Justin Burgess (215) was pinned by Nate Ulmer.

Jacob Boots (275) handled Daniel Schmucker and finally fall at 5:15. Warsaw then received a forfeit at 103 and Matt Tetreau recorded a victory at 112 while Nick Missos (119) lost to Cemal Konca.

Then Curtis Clark (125) lost to Tim Zick, and Willie Winston was surprised by Callie Prater, putting the team score at 37-35. Chris Elvidge (135) quickly pinned Cliff Knepper in 24 seconds, giving the 43-35 win to the Tigers.

Three Team Losses

Warsaw came out on the short end of a narrow 42-41 score against Eastside in round two. Through heavyweight the score was tied at 24 as a result of four pins in a row by Raymer, Perry, Miller, and Boots.

Freshman Johnny Mattson (103), weighing in at 90 pounds, earned his first varsity win, accumulating a 10-4 lead before his opponent was disqualified. In the final match Chris Elvidge scored a major decision, but the team wound up just a tad short and dropped to 1-1 on the day after the loss to Eastside.

Against LaVille, just four Tigers grabbed victories, including Raymer, Perry, Miller, and Elvidge. But a combination of two forfeits and six wins by fall gave LaVille the team victory, 48-34.

Warsaw also lost to Kokomo in a 52-25 drubbing. The Tigers managed to squeeze out just four individual victories, from Boots, Elvidge, Miller, and the first varsity win for Justin Burgess (215).

Burgess, a senior, has been involved in high school wrestling for just two weeks. Burgess is in a very competitive weight class, but Warsaw coaches anticipate that he will do nothing but improve as the season progresses. He showed some real spunk and tremendous athleticism in grinding out a 7-0 decision against Clint Stucker.

Warsaw vs. Valley

Warsaw got back on track in a crunching 54-22 victory over Tippecanoe Valley. Joel Perry notched another win, against only one loss on the day, pinning Roman Cantreras in 1:43. Perry's wins were all by fall and his only loss was to undefeated Kevin Windell of Kokomo. Valley's squad was thin, giving up forfeits in eight of the fourteen weight classes.

In head to head competition against Warsaw, the Vikings won three and lost two. Drew Heinhold (119), AJ Austin (125), and Joel Krueger (130) each scored wins for the Valley against the Tigers, but they could not overcome the forfeit battle and the final score left Warsaw on top, 54-22
