Warsaw Wrestlers Fall To Jimtown
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
ELKHART - It was basically youth versus experience in the wrestling regional matchup between Warsaw and Jimtown Wednesday.
And experience won out.
A shorthanded Tiger squad plugged some needed holes with three freshmen against the No. 18 Jimmies. Already sporting a lineup with only two seniors, it was tough for Warsaw to overcome as Jimtown pulled away for a 38-27 win in the team regional semifinals.
"We had some young kids going up against upperclassmen," Warsaw coach Tony Boley said. "I have no complaints about the effort. I think we stepped it up a little more. Hopefully, next year we will come up here and win one of these."
It marks the second year for the team regionals, and the second year that Warsaw has fallen in the first round. Northern Lakes Conference rival Goshen went onto beat Jimtown in the regional finals, 34-28, later in the night. The Redskins beat Prairie Heights 39-29 in the first round.
After Warsaw forfeited Scott Snyder's 103 slot, Adam Harter came up with a big win at 112 and Tim Roe (119) and Robbie Boley (125) each pinned their Jimtown opponents to open up a 15-6 lead.
But then Jay Hammer, wrestling a weight class lower in Greg Patrick's 130 position lost to Scott Hershberger (24-4); freshman Richard Wolfe fell to Shawn Barnett; and Aaron Banks (140) and Cory Patrick (145) also dropped decisions.
By the time Matt Zellers beat Adam Johnson at 152, the Tigers were down 27-18. Zellers' and Chris Wilson's win at 160 brought Warsaw within 27-21. But then two freshmen, Kris Hueber (171) and Ryan Brennan (189) lost to more experienced Jimmie opponents, and it was 35-21.
The nail in the coffin was when Steve McKinley lost a controversial decision at 215. McKinley led Jimtown's Travis Davis 4-3 in the final seconds and only had to hang on for the win. But the officials ruled that McKinley held on too long, with an illegal hold, and Davis was given two points with an escape and a penalty point for a 5-4 win.
A dozen Warsaw wrestlers now travel to Goshen Saturday for the individual wrestling regional at 9 a.m.
