BLOOMINGTON – Warsaw’s unified track team put itself in rare company Saturday, bringing home a second state championship trophy and getting a police escort back into town to celebrate.
The unified team, made up of both developmentally disabled and mainstream students, competed in five events; long jump, shot put, 100 and 400 dash and a 4x100 relay. The meet expanded from 13 teams in the first year to around 70 teams this season. For some of the athletes it’s more about the social aspect and having fun. Others take it as seriously as any athlete in a big-time competition.
The inaugural unified track state meet was held in 2014 and was won by Warsaw.
Warsaw’s 107 points Saturday edged Noblesville, the runnerup with 103 points.
In the boys state track meet, Owen Glogovsky was the only Tiger to bring home a medal, placing sixth in the 3200.
Senior Ross Armey took 12th in the 300 hurdles. The Tiger 4x100 relay team was disqualified when the third exchange took place outside of the designated zone.
Whitko’s Walker Hobbs tossed the shot put 49-2.5, but wasn’t among the nine finalists in the event. Alex Morales covered the 110 hurdles in 15.0 seconds, good for 15th in the preliminaries.
Carmel won the state championship with 43 points, with Michigan City and Ben Davis tying for second with 41 points each.
Warsaw had four points in the meet.[[In-content Ad]]
