The 5-foot-9 Mr. Basketball candidate scored 20 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 32 points in Friday's 57-55 overtime-win over Northern Lakes Conference rival Concord.[[In-content Ad]]Just as impressive, however, was how the Illinois State-bound guard defended Concord sophomore Franko House, limiting the 6-5 mountain of a man to six points.
"Franko House scored 29 points against Elkhart Central," said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle. "He only scored six points with Nic guarding him most of the time tonight. Our defense on Franko House was a positive."
Moore, who became just the third player in Warsaw history to score 1,700 points in a career, also pulled down five rebounds and dished out four assists.
Junior Lucas Grose, who turned one of Moore's assists into an alley-oop dunk just before halftime, chipped in with 13 points.
"It was a mismatch, but it wasn't," Concord coach Steve Austin said of Moore guarding House, who, along with 6-8 junior Jason Spriggs, fouled out in the fourth quarter. "We wanted to pound it inside and take advantage there and we didn't."
In Concord's 79-60 win at Elkhart Central Tuesday, House and Spriggs combined for 47 points.
Against the Tigers, the Minutmen's formidable frontcourt combined to score six points on 3-of-10 shooting.
Sophomore DuWhan Alford led Concord with 19 points, 12 of which came behind the arc, while senior Josh Schuller scored 12 points and junior Seth Huxford and senior Anthony Yoder added eight points each.
With the win, Warsaw improved to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in NLC play, while Concord fell to 7-5 and 2-2.
The Tigers have won 16 straight conference games.
NorthWood, which beat Goshen 45-41 Friday night, is also 4-0 in NLC action and comes to the Tiger Den Friday.
"Our offensive execution was lacking, but we did a nice job at the free throw line," said Ogle, whose team was 17 of 39 from the field overall, 4 of 13 from three-point range, and 19 of 22 at the charity stripe. "We attacked the basket and got to the free throw line. Our free throw shooting and our defense on Franko House was the difference in the game."
While Concord was 5 of 7 at the free throw line as a team, Moore was 10 of 11 for Warsaw, Grose was 6 of 7 and sophomore Jared Bloom was 4 of 4.
Warsaw led 17-14 after one quarter of play, 32-30 at halftime and 42-39 at the end of the third quarter.
The two teams were knotted at 48-48 after 32 minutes of action.
A free throw by Grose with 1:16 remaining in the extra session gave the Tigers a 55-52 advantage, but a bucket from Schuller cut Concord's deficit to one, and Alford tied the game with a free throw with 30 seconds to play.
Moore sank two charity tosses with 10 seconds left to account for the final score.
Yoder and Alford both missed shots in the waning seconds, with Alford's errant attempt being rebounded by Warsaw's Jalen Roscoe to secure the win.
"I'm sure this is encouraging to them as far as the sectional goes," said Ogle said of the Minutemen, who could face the Tigers in the Elkhart Sectional at North Side Gym. "We've got to get better if we're going to win the sectional, and this game shows us that."
While the Minutemen's chances of winning a conference championship are now much slimmer, Austin was encouraged by his team's efforts and is excited about a possible rematch in the state tournament.
"We're probably out of the conference now, but it's going to be a very good sectional," said Austin.
Warsaw has won 16 of the last 20 meetings with Concord and now leads the all-time series 41-15.
The Tigers have won the last three games against the Minutemen by a total of 10 points.
Friday's victory over Concord came 20 years after Warsaw escaped with a 63-62 win on Todd Szymanski's buzzer-beating three-pointer.
Whether he was the coach at South Bend St. Joe, Northridge or now Concord, Austin's teams have always battled the Tigers.
"It's a great place to play," Austin said of the Tiger Den. "We've had some great battles here. I'd like to come out of here on the other end a few times, but we were there."
Warsaw will host NorthWood Friday, while Concord will entertain Wawasee.
