Warsaw Wins Golf Sectional

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

The only senior on Warsaw's boys golf team, Scotty Boyle turned in the best 18-hole score of his varsity career at Saturday's sectional.

The two freshman and two sophomores that joined him in the Tigers' five-man lineup weren't bad either, as Warsaw won the program's 23rd sectional championship by shooting a 308 at Stonehenge.[[In-content Ad]]The Tigers beat runner-up Tippecanoe Valley by 18 strokes.

"Over the last four years, he's done it all for the program, he's been a team player," Warsaw coach Ben Barkey said of Boyle, who finished the day with a 77. "He's not a flashy player, he just went out and did what he had to do. For him to shoot a 77, I'm so proud of him. That's the best 18-hole score of his varsity career."

Sophomore Mitchell Gauger shot a 76 for Warsaw and finished tied for second individually, while freshman Tyler Ostrom carded a 77, sophomore Eric Tandy shot 78 and freshman Bennett Hollar finished with an 81.

"It was our day," said Barkey. "We're a young team, but we've got talent. We shot a 147 on the front and just played confident and kept our heads in it. A 308 is a great score here, but we still have some things to work on."

The top three teams, as well as the top three individuals not on an advancing team, will play in Thursday's regional at Orchard Ridge Country Club in Fort Wayne.

Joining Warsaw (308) and Valley (326) at the regional will be the Triton Trojans, who shot 335 to finish third by virtue of a fifth-man tiebreaker.

Bremen finished fourth with a 335, followed by Manchester (338), Culver Military Academy (345), Plymouth (347), Southwood (347), Wawasee (348), Northfield (356), Wabash (379) and Culver Community (423).

While Manchester's team didn't advance, the Squires will be represented at the regional by Josh Troyer, who earned medalist honors Saturday by shooting a 75 on the par-71 course.

Bremen's Max Kipfer (77), Northfield's Chad Glasscock (78) and Southwood's (Josh Tealker) also advanced as individuals.

While it was commonplace for the host Tigers to advance to the regional, Valley's team advanced past the sectional for the first time since 2001.

While the final groups came off the course, Valley's players talked amongst themselves, worrying about how close the scores might be.

As it turned out, the Vikings had little to worry about, as they beat third-place Triton by nine strokes.

"The kids have just been on a roll," said Valley coach Roger Moriarty, whose team won nine regular season matches in a row before falling to Warsaw three days before the sectional. "We haven't played in the regional as a team since 2001. We've had some individuals get out, but to go as a team, we're pretty excited. This is big for our program. The kids played well."

Caleb Rovenstine finished tied for second individually and led Valley with a 76.

Other scores for the Vikings included Bray Swihart's 82, Kenny Campbell's 83, Dan Silva's 85 and Taylor Breeden's 97.

"We were seeded eighth coming into the sectional," said Moriarty. "I told the kids not to let that bother them. We put two good nine-hole rounds together today. The kids were a little disappointed they shot a 162 on the front, but they hung in there. I couldn't be more proud of them."

Triton coach Jack Carpenter certainly had reason to smile too, as his team advanced on a fifth-man tiebreaker.

Both the Trojans and rival Bremen Lions shot 335, but Triton moved on because Griffyn Carpenter shot a 90, while Bremen's David Leeper finished with a 92.

"We talked about that," Carpenter said of the possibility of a fifth-man tiebreaker. "I told the kids no matter what, they have to grind it out. The South Bend Sectional came down to a fifth man. The sectional at Spring Meadow came down to a fifth-man score. I told them to grind it out for 18 holes."

Taran Kennedy led Triton with an 80, while Colton Keel carded an 82, Chandler Slone shot 85 and Dane Kennedy turned in an 88.

While the coaches from Warsaw (13-3), Valley (11-4) and Triton (14-2) were certainly excited to survive and advance, the same couldn't be said for Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone.

The Warriors, who beat Warsaw in a nine-hole match at Stonehenge during the regular season, finished ninth and didn't advance after posting a 16-2 record in the regular season.

Curtis Coverstone led the Warriors with an 81, while John Kirkwood shot 84, Ben Jackson carded an 88 and Ryan Koble and Jake Garner both shot 95.

Manchester got a 75 from Troyer, but then only got two other players to shoot in the 80s.

Matt Budnik finished with an 84, while Kyle Lahman shot an 88. Scott Spaulding carded a 91, while Aaron Olinger finished with a 100.
