Warsaw Wins Catfight In The Tiger Den
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Warsaw's boys basketball team defeated NorthWood 65-51 in a physical Northern Lakes Conference matchup Friday.
NorthWood struck early and scored the first points of the game as Charlie Roeder sank a basket to put the Panthers up 2-0.
The Tigers answered with a Chris Wiggins' three-point goal, and the battle of the big cats began.
The score seesawed back and forth for the entire first quarter, and when the buzzer sounded at the end of the first frame, the score stood at 19-18 in NorthWood's favor.
"They hit a good percentage of their shots in the first quarter," said Warsaw coach Al Rhodes.
The Tigers took control in the second frame as Rob Kesler and Ross Kesler teamed up for 10 of the Tigers 20 second-quarter points.
With 7:16 left in the second, Rob Kesler nailed a three-point shot to put the Tigers up 33-21, and less than 30 seconds later, Ross Kesler stole the ball from the Panther offense and laid it in the basket to give Warsaw a four-point lead.
"We made a couple of turnovers, and they turned them into three-point shots," said NorthWood coach Dan Gunn. "The Keslers beat us in the second. We tried to put pressure on Rob, but that opened up the middle."
Darin Nunemaker, who scored nine points in the first quarter, was held scoreless by the Tiger defense in the second frame.
"We didn't play hard enough in the first quarter, but Ross Kesler came in and helped us shut down Nunemaker in the second quarter," said Rhodes.
The Tigers went on to outscore the Panthers 20-11 in the quarter and headed to the locker room with a 38-30 lead at the half.
NorthWood kept Warsaw from scoring for the first 2:30 of the third quarter, but hit the net only once in that time, missing a chance to cut the deficit.
Warsaw came alive in the final five minutes of the third as the Tigers outscored the Panthers 13-9 in the quarter to take a 51-39 lead as they went into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was much like the third as the Tigers outscored the Panthers 14-12 on their way to a 65-51 victory.
"Warsaw has more weight in the post than anybody I've seen in a while," said Gunn. "We just don't have the size in the middle to play one-on-one against them all night. They did a good job of taking advantage of our overplays and grabbing offensive rebounds. They got some good long rebounds.
"Warsaw is probably the best team we have played all year, but we are getting better."
"An important part of tonight's game was our bench," said Rhodes. "We got our players in off the bench and their players down."
Warsaw improved its record to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in the NLC.
NorthWood fell to 3-5 and 1-2 in the NLC.
Warsaw hosts Concord next Friday.
NorthWood hosts John Glenn this evening.
