The announcement was made Wednesday night during a Bicycle and Pedestrian-Friendly Community application party at Mad Anthony’s, Warsaw. The meeting was attended by approximately 100 people including city and county officials and local residents.
Pete Fritz, Indiana Department of Health healthy communities planner, made the announcement.
A grant contract still needs to be established with the contract expected to be finalized by May, Fritz said.
The master plan promotes bicycling and walking from a policy standpoint to promote and define improvements the city can make to sidewalks, bike lanes and bike paths to make the city safer for cycling and walking, Fritz said.
Also during the application party, Fred Helfrich, Kosciusko Velo Cycling Club advocacy chairman, submitted an application online to the League of American Bicyclists to qualify Winona Lake and Warsaw to be Bicycle and Pedestrian-Friendly Communities.
The cycling club began the process last spring to apply for the status.
The idea is to provide dedicated areas for safe bike and pedestrian routes.
It also will allow existing greenways in Winona Lake and Warsaw to be connected.
Helfrich said it will take three months to hear back from the league to see if the status has been granted.
If the club does not obtain the status, it will reapply in July.
Helfrich thanked the city for supporting the status.
Mayor Joe Thallemer said there has been a great deal of interest by the city and the community in obtaining the status.
“The city has come together with the Velo Cycling Club and decided to work with the infrastructure portion of the project and make sure there is funding and planning to get this accomplished,” Thallemer said.
He also said the status will be an asset to the community.[[In-content Ad]]
