SYRACUSE — The Warsaw and Wawasee boys and girls swim teams split Tuesday night in Syracuse.
The visiting Warsaw Tigers’ boys team earned a 115-71 Northern Lakes Conference win, while the 19th-ranked Wawasee Lady Warriors picked up a 101-82 victory over their Warsaw counterparts.
“The boys ran some good times, the girls ran some good times, so I’m not going to complain,” Warsaw swim coach Nathan Taylor said. “Wawasee’s ranked (19th) in the state for the girls, so it was try to come in here and pull an upset. It is what it is. They’re a good team.”
The Lady Tigers (3-3 NLC) actually began the swimming portion of the meet by taking first and second in the 200 medley relay, but the Lady Warriors (4-1 NLC) went on to win 10 of the other 11 events.
In the win, sophomore Breanna Robinson (200 free, 100 free) and freshman Kayla Hershberger (200 IM, 500 free) each won two individual events, while also teaming with sophomores Kendra Miller and Rachel Rozow on the winning 200 free relay, as well as Miller and freshman Elizabeth Rozow on the victorious 400 free relay.
Robinson, who’s the top-ranked 100 free swimmer and ranked second in the state in the 200 free, overcame a stomach bug to achieve her four wins, but she wasn’t alone.
Wawasee senior Sebastian List was also under the weather, but he still managed to win the 200 free, as well as being a part of the winning 200 free relay with junior Luke Smith, junior Zac Hershberger and freshman Logan Brugh.
“Bre had an entire 24 hours of throwing up, so she’s had nothing in her system,” Wawasee coach Julie Robinson said. “Sebastian started throwing up at the end of the day. Both of them decided, for their teams, that they wanted to come out here and compete and score points. I think that takes a lot of courage.”
Despite his effort, List couldn’t overcome the Tigers’ depth, as the Warsaw boys team won eight events, led by sophomores Jayden Parrett and Spencer Davidson.
The sophomore duo each won two events, with Parrett taking the 50 free and 100 back, while Davidson won the 100 fly and 100 breast.
The two also joined senior Caleb Snyder and freshman Matt Wildman on the first-place 200 medley relay, as well as junior J.D. French and freshman Zach Taylor on the winning 400 free relay.
However, Long wasn’t only pleased with the effort of those two.
“(Sophomore) Josh Miller’s been stepping up, (freshman) Zach Taylor’s been strong,” Long said. “We’ve developed them a little bit more. Caleb Snyder and Josh Miller have both gotten better at underwater kicks. A whole bunch of people are stepping up for us. (Davidson and Parrett) are sort of the two leaders, as far as times, but one or two guys can’t win you a swim meet. It has to be six to eight.”
This season, the Lady Warriors have had that depth, and it’s been with some youth.
Along with Bre Robinson and Hershberger, the Wawasee girls team got wins from sophomores Kendra Miller (50 free), Tori Sylvester (diving), Rachel Rozow (100 fly) and freshman Elizabeth Rozow (100 back).
“The most exciting thing is taking the newer swimmers and watching their faces when they look up at the scoreboard and look like, ‘Did I do that?,’” Julie Robinson said. “When they see that big time drop. That’s what it’s really all about.”
Along with seeing the excitement on their faces, she’s also been seeing some fatigue.
The Warsaw meet was her team’s fifth in 15 days, and it still has to travel to conference-favorite Northridge Thursday before taking a break until a Jan. 5 at Goshen.
“Right now, with having so many meets, I think they’re mentally and physically tired,” the Wawasee coach said. “It’s going to be nice to have a few weeks to just focus on training and getting back to our technique and basics.”
Despite the fatigue, she’s seeing good things.
“Swimming as tired as they are, it’s hard to stay focused and continue to compete at a high level,” she said. “We still had many kids swimming right at their best times or had big drops. Cassidy Manning dropped four seconds off her 200 IM time, Zac (Hershberger) had a personal best in his 100 breast. There were just a lot of kids out there still racing, still working hard.”
Long is also seeing his swimmers wear down, but he’s not feeling sorry for them.
“I have a lot of complaints that we’re tired, so we’re right where we need to be,” he said. “Maybe a little bit short, because we should be more tired than we are right now.”
Warsaw is off until a Jan. 2 meet at Tippecanoe Valley, but Thursday’s girls meet between Northridge and Wawasee will draw some attention.
Having competed against both teams, as the Warsaw girls fell 117-68 at home on Dec. 6 to No. 17 Northridge, Long anticipates a good one Thursday night in Middlebury.
“I think it’s going to be a very good swim meet,” he said. “I’m not going to speculate on who’s going to win, because I don’t need to juice up one team over the other. I think it will  be a very good swim meet.”
