Tony Boley's first season as wrestling coach at Warsaw High School has certainly been an interesting one. Injuries and illness have caused many lineup changes, and with a squad mainly made up of underclassmen (with only three seniors), Boley has watched his squad have its ups and downs.
Through all this, the Tigers have steadily progressed, and through all they have gone through, they are now sectional champions, ending Plymouth's one-year stranglehold of the Warsaw Sectional trophy.
"We have had to overcome adversity the whole year," Boley said. "These kids just kept getting better every single day. It is tremendous to see the improvement they have made since the first week until now."
The sectional title, as it has every year since 1982, came down to Warsaw and Northern Lakes Conference Championship-rival Plymouth.
Entering the championship and consolation rounds, the Tigers held a 169-138 1/2 lead over the Pilgrims. Warsaw and Plymouth went head-to-head in half of the 14 weight class championship matches, making things even that much more interesting.
To win the team title, all Warsaw had to do was hold its own against Plymouth. Which its did.
"We had an indication by the seeds that if we wrestled to our potential that it would basically be a dual meet in the finals," Boley said.
Plymouth ended up with six individual champions, while Warsaw had five. It was enough to hold off the Pilgrims, 199 1/2 to 190 1/2.
It was a reversal of fortunes for the Tigers, who finished fourth in the NLC meet and while Plymouth was second.
"Plymouth is a very good team," Boley said. "They have a good tradition and are very well coached. They placed second in the conference last week and wrestled great. We couldn't put together another good day at conference, but today we came out to wrestle, we wrestled well and some things fell our way."
Individual champions for Warsaw were: Adam Harter (112), Greg Patrick (119), Robbie Boley (130), Steve Fribley (171), and Marvin Farmer (189).
"Steve Fribley at 171 was a big win," Boley said. "Adam Harter was a big win at112 because he placed third at the conference and that kid Plymouth's Joe Binfet won it. We made a strategic manuever at put my boy (Robbie Boley) at 130. He has wrestled all year at 125, and he won.
"This kids grew up a lot, not only on the mat, but I think emotionally and mentally," Coach Boley said. "They have learned a lot, and they learned how to wrestle in the sectional as a freshman or sophomore, and they will be back. Hopefully, we can get more kids walking in the hallways to come out for the team. We have about 1800 kids, and you should have more kids on the team. We need more to compete with the Penns and Mishawakas and everybody else."
Warsaw now travels to Jimtown in the team wrestling competition.
"It is the second year for that format (team wrestling)," Boley said. "There are pros and cons. We are going to go up to Jimtown and the competition will be tough. We will have to be ready to wrestle. And the Goshen Regional (for individuals) is tough, but hopefully we can get some gets through to semistate."
Triton finished third with 96 points and got individual champions from Ryan Klotz (103) and Daniel Sellers (140). Valley had a champion in Chris Hoover (160). The champion and runnerup in each weight class advance to Saturday's Goshen Regional.
