SYRACUSE -ÊGoing into Saturday's Northern Lakes Conference boys swim meet, the state-ranked squad from Northridge was favored to win.

And the No. 4 Raiders did not disappoint, securing first-place finishes in all but two events to win the NLC meet with a score of 378 points. Wawasee was second with 261 points, while Warsaw placed third with 214 points.

"Northridge is really, really good," said Wawasee coach Roger Karns. "But our guys went out there and swam well.

"We graduated nine kids off last year's team that placed second in the NLCs. Who'd have thought we'd come back and do it again this year? These guys have done an outstanding job of making themselves competitive this season."

Although the Warriors did not win any of the events, they placed in the top six in 11 of 12 events.

"We had 20 season-best swims out of 24 today," said Karns. "The guys really stepped up for us today."

The third-place Tigers had swimmers placed 11 of 12 races as well, with Nate Taylor earning Warsaw's only first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.

"We had some good swims out there," said Warsaw coach Terry Aukeman. "With the seed times, we knew it was a possibility that (Nate Taylor) could win (the 100 breaststroke). He swam a good race and did a good job."

Along with Taylor's first-place finish, the Tigers captured six second-place ribbons. The 200 freestyle relay team of Thad Wallin, Kyle Marose, Steven Lowrance and Taylor swam a time of 1:43.20 to earn second place.

Other Tiger second place finishers were Nate Long (200 freestyle, 1:48.69 and 100 freestyle, 49.98), Will Kretsch (diving, 391.1), Taylor (500 freestyle, 4:51.66) and Wallin (100 backstroke, 57.30).

"Nate Long did very well in his races," said Aukeman. "Will Kretsch dove well. We had many good performances out there today."

Wawasee had swimmers place second in three events. Brook Singrey swam the 50 freestyle in 22.5 seconds to earn a second-place finish. Both the 200 freestyle relay team of Jordan Rantz, Steve Dingeldein, Brian Doty and Brook Singrey and the 400 freestyle relay team of Doty, Singrey, Dingeldein and Aaron Phillippe garnered second-place finishes as well.

"Our guys came in here and really showed who they are," said Karns. "The relays were excellent for us. Before the meet, I usually try to figure out the splits, and they beat my expectations for times in all three relays. That doesn't happen often. It was a good surprise."

Three local swimmers were named to the All-NLC squad, while four earned honorable mention spots. Taylor and Long of Warsaw aslong with Wawasee's Singrey earned spots on the NLC squad. Honorable mention honors went to Will Kretsch and Thad Wallin of Warsaw and Jordan Rantz and Steve Dingeldein of Wawasee.
