Warsaw VB Team Wins NLC Opener

After defeating state-ranked Fort Wayne Snider in Fort Wayne last week, the Warsaw Tigers prepared to begin the Northern Lakes Conference against the Goshen Redskins.
The Warsaw squad jumped out to a good NLC start after defeating the Redskins 15-7, 15-9 Thursday night in the Tigers' home opener.
In the first game, Warsaw and Goshen traded side-outs in the early possessions until Warsaw's Kara Kesler stepped to the serving line and set up four straight points for the Tigers.
After trading possessions several more time, Goshen's Becky Rheinheimer sparked a three-point Redskin run to bring the score to 4-3 in Warsaw's favor.
However, that would be the last run Warsaw would allow in the match. Ryann Jones and Andrea Saldivar moved in to serving position and set up four points each on separate occasions to put the Tigers up 12-3. Goshen had mustered up four more points in the match and make the score 13-7, but Jones stepped to the service line and led the Tigers to two more points and victory in the first match.
"We played well, but not just as well as we could have," said Warsaw coach Tanya Coon. "We were a bit slow and draggy."
The second match was a different story. The Tigers could not seem to put a string of points together in the early stages of the match. Warsaw took an early 6-1 lead, but no two points came from the same server.
Goshen was down but not out when Crystal Sprague moved in and led the Redskins to five straight points to tie the score at 6. Warsaw took a 9-6 lead after several more possessions, but Goshen later tied the score at nine.
Then Warsaw's Amie Poling got the job done for the Tigers when she led them to six consecutive points and the 15-9 win.
"In the second match, we came out really slow," said Coon. "We couldn't seem to get anything going. We did not play at our level. We are capable of playing better, but we pulled it out."
Warsaw, 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the NLC, will now prepare to host the Warsaw Invite Saturday.
"We will work on moving faster, hitting the ball harder, and coming out ready to play," said Coon. "We want to be ready to play from the first serve of the game, not wait until five or six plays into it before we get into the game. We'll definitely work on that before this weekend."
