July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Fresh off its second-straight Northern Lakes Conference championship, Warsaw’s boys tennis team took a step toward a third-consecutive sectional title Wednesday evening.
With a 4-1 win over the Whitko Wildcats, the host Tigers improved to 10-5 on the season and advanced to tonight’s 4:30 p.m. sectional semifinal match against county and conference rival Wawasee.
“The guys played pretty well tonight,” said Warsaw coach Rick Orban. “Except for a couple courts, we dominated the match.”
In Wednesday’s other match, the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings improved to 7-12 on the season with a 4-1 win over the Columbia City Eagles.
With the win, Valley advanced to Friday’s championship match of the five-team sectional, where it will meet either Warsaw or Wawasee.
“You always wanna move on in the sectional,” said Valley coach Rosten Hamman. “We’re a senior-heavy team. We have six seniors. It’s nice for them to move on and get one more match.”
In their match against Whitko, the Tigers scored the three points needed to win the match in just under an hour.
At No. 2 doubles, a match that took little more than half an hour, Warsaw juniors Nic Jansen and Caleb Ray beat freshmen Alex Robbins and Alex Bechtold 6-0, 6-0.
“Our No. 2 doubles team is really hot right now,” said Orban. “They’re playing really well right now.”
At No. 1 doubles, Warsaw seniors Will Petro and Nikos Schlitt had and easy first set with sophomore Reed Brace and freshman Bailey Platt, winning 6-0. The young Whitko duo, however, made things a bit more interesting in the second set before falling 6-3.
“This is the sectional, you have to be ready to play, no matter who you’re playing,” said Orban. “Anything can happen. Whitko came back and gave us a run for our money at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles.”
Warsaw senior Evan Miller won the No. 3 singles match, beating Whitko junior Cole Bechtold 6-0, 6-0, while Warsaw senior Kyle Wettschurack was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Wildcats senior Blake Castle at No. 2 singles.
Whitko scored its lone team point at No. 1 singles, where senior Tyler Baugher beat Warsaw junior Sam Rice 6-4, 6-4.
Baugher will play in the individual sectional, which will be held next week at Culver Military Academy.
“Tyler is a really solid player,” said Orban. “He has a great forehand.”
In the win over Columbia City, Valley got a point at No. 2 doubles by forfeit, as the Eagles didn’t have enough players.
The Vikings then earned points at No. 1 doubles and Nos. 2 and 3 singles.
In the No. 1 doubles victory, senior Logan Britton and sophomore Trevor Neeley defeated sophomore McKade Kennedy and freshman Matt Kennedy 6-2, 6-1.
At No. 2 singles, Valley senior Derrick Cunningham topped Columbia City senior Blake Fearnow 6-3, 7-6 (10-8).
And at No. 3 singles, Valley senior Isaac Shewman beat freshman Dillon Reed 6-3, 6-1.
As was the case for Warsaw, Valley’s only loss of the match came at No. 1 singles, where Columbia City sophomore Nikko Rongos won a back-and-forth match, beating Valley senior Tanner Neeley 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
