Warsaw Tiger Offense Scorches Kokomo Wildkats

KOKOMO -ÊWarsaw's boys basketball team ended the regular season where it started, in Kokomo.

Warsaw, which competed in the Kokomo scrimmage to start the season, wrapped up the regular season by picking apart the Wildkats 78-60 Friday on their homoe floor. Warsaw improves to 14-7, while Kokomo falls to 11-9.

So efficient was Warsaw's offense that the Tigers hit 16 of 20 field goals (80 percent) and 16 of 17 free throws (94 percent) in outscoring Kokomo 51-34 in the second half.

"One key tonight was our shooting throughout the game," Warsaw coach Al Rhodes said. "That meant they were not able to play the zone defense they wanted to play."

The zone-buster was Warsaw senior reserve guard Trent Martin. Martin scored a career-high 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. All six were three-pointers, and he started 4 for 4 as Warsaw built a 24-15 lead with 6:20 left in the second quarter.

Martin's three-point shooting pulled the Wildkats out of their zone and opened things up for Josh Buck in the second half.

Buck led all scorers with 29 points on 9-of-14 shooting. After Martin scored 12 from the perimeter in the first half, Buck scored 20 of his 29 inside in the second half.

"We were patient on offense and got good reversal of the basketball in the seecond half," said Rhodes. "We went to Josh Buck quite a bit, and he did a nice job of taking the ball to the basket."

Clearly the effectiveness of Martin early staggered Kokomo.

"We knew he could shoot," first-year Kokomo coach Mike Wade said. "We were hoping he would not hit everything he threw up. Tonight he did."

Kokomo was a one-man team as senior forward Blair Crawford scored 25. No other Wildkat scored more than eight.

Vikings Win Ugly Over Bremen, Improve To 15-5

By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer

AKRON - It didn't take third-year Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball coach Bill Patrick long to assess Friday night's 53-51 win over visiting Bremen. The first words out of his mouth as he came out of the lockerroom said it all.

"It was pretty ugly but it was a win," Patrick, who now owns a 526-198 record in 32 seasons, said.

On a night Patrick was given a plaque and named 2000 coach of the year for a region consisting of Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin, putting him in the running for national coach of the year, the Vikings survived an altogether ugly night.

Valley senior starting guard Drew Shafer was helped off the court in the first quarter after his head hit the court in an unhealthy fashion, with the public address anouncer immediatley calling for a doctor. A female in the front row passed out. A young fan was injured falling down the bleachers.

The 5-foot-10 Shafer was assisted to the lockerroom, where he spent the rest of the first half.

"This was the type of game where Shafer really could have helped us," Patrick said. "He probably could have scored 15 points tonight. He was having back spasms. I thought he was really hurt, hitting his head like that. But other than the back spasms he's OK. Hopefully Monday he'll be ready to go."

Patrick called the game ugly, and then numerous times he referred to it as a tough game.

To go with the aforementioned problems, it was Senior Night. The booster club was recognized. It was the regular season finale. It was against a team Patrick really felt his team could put away.

The Vikings sprinted out of the gates, taking a 7-0 lead, but it took a lay-up by senior Andy Martin with three seconds remaining in regulation to give them the win.

Valley finishes the regular season 15-5, while Bremen falls to 7-12.

Trailing from the get-go, the Lions came back and made it 12-10 at the end of one quarter of play and 24-21 at halftime.

"We had letdowns two or three times defensively," Patrick said. "We let their kids penetrate and dump it inside. We gave up some offensive rebounds tonight. I think one time they had three offensive rebounds in a row."

Sophomore Greg Neeley knotted the score at 26 with a three at the seven-minute mark of the third quarter, and then gave the Lions their first lead of the game, 33-32, on a three with 3:27 left in the third.

Bremen took a 35-32 lead before Valley senior Anthony Domenico tied the game at 37 with 1:34 remaining in the third. The Lions entered the final frame with a 39-37 lead.

The two teams battled back and forth through the fourth quarter before a three-point play by senior Cody New gave the Vikings a 50-48 lead at the 1:22 mark.

New, who led all scorers with 23 points, added a charity toss with 32 seconds left, but a Neeley trey tied the game at 51 with l8 seconds remaining. With three seconds left Martin hit the game winner, and then sophomore Trey Eaton intercepted Bremen's downcourt attempt at a buzzer beater.

To go with his game-high 23 points, New also pulled down 11 rebounds. Eaton finished the game with 12 points, while Martin had seven and Domenico five. Neely paced Bremen with 13, while sophomore Alex Bryant added nine, Matt Cunningham eight and Nick Bragg and Kevin Faulstich six each.

New scored his 23 points on 10-of-28 shooting from the field, while Eaton was 4 of 13. For the game, Valley was 21 of 55 from the field.

"We didn't shoot the ball well at all," Patrick said. "Bremen was sagging back inside and we couldn't get them to drop."

The Vikings will be in action Friday against Plymouth in the Plymouth 3A Sectional.

"We were down and we could have folded," Patrick said. "We came back and found a way to win, that's the mark of a good team. I don't think this will hurt us at all, it may even help us."
