CULVER — The Warsaw girls tennis team kept its season going, while Manchester’s ended Tuesday at Culver Academies.
In the opening round of the Culver Girls Academy Regional, the Warsaw Lady Tigers defeated Plymouth 3-2, while Manchester fell 5-0 against the hosting CGA Lady Eagles.
Warsaw returns to Culver today for the championship match against CGA at 5:15 p.m.
Manchester reached the regional round by winning last week’s Peru Sectional, its first title since 2006.
However, the regional competition was quite a step up for the Lady Squires.
“We've played some good teams this year,” Manchester co-coach Tim McLaughlin said. “Huntington North is really solid, Peru's a good team and Muncie Central is too, but our girls have never seen this level of tennis. It was exciting to beat Peru to win the sectional and that was our main goal, along with winning conference. We got both of those things accomplished. It was a great season.”
While Manchester may have felt overwhelmed, Warsaw was feeling good, facing a Plymouth squad it defeated 3-2 on April 17 in Warsaw.
Early, it appeared the Lady Tigers were in control, easily winning the first set on each singles court.
On one of those courts, sophomore Sarah Boyle made quick work of Plymouth sophomore Ellen Smith, winning 6-1, 6-0.
During the three-match Warsaw Sectional, Boyle lost just three sets, with all of them being in the championship match against Columbia City, so coach Rick Orban was hoping that hot streak would continue.
“Boyle is kicking butt,” he said. “I asked if she could get another (6-0, 6-0 win), and it's nice when a kid goes, 'Sure I can.' That's confidence. It's great to see how that confidence's turned around in the postseason.”
Following a No. 2 doubles loss, the match score was knotted until Warsaw senior Sarah Hartle won 6-1, 6-0, setting up a tight finish.
Each of the two remaining courts went into third sets and both also needed line judges called over to settle any disputed calls.
“Calls were close and it gets tense,” Orban said. “(Sophomore) Jacqueline (Sasso at No. 2 singles) has never called for a line judge, and she just looked at me and said, 'That's it. I need a line judge.' Anytime you get a match this close, this intense, I don't think kids try to cheat, but in their mind, they're willing that ball out. So, if it's extremely close, they see it as out. It just happens in a match this close.”
After winning their second set to force a third, Warsaw’s No. 1 doubles tandem of juniors Lindsay Sciarra and Olivia Wallin fell 6-1 in the third, leaving the entire match up to Sasso at No. 2 singles.
Sasso began her match with a 6-3 opening-set win, but fell 6-2 in the second.
After falling behind 1-0 in the third, she called for the line judge.
Plymouth junior Allie Berger then held a 2-1 set lead, but Sasso battled back and appeared to gain a psychological advantage, going on to win the set 6-2.
“Jacqueline knew she was the winning point,” Orban said. “She could see the 1 doubles court and what was happening in their third set. So, I'm really, really proud of her. She just really decided she wanted it.”
And her service game really came through in the third set, posting three aces.
“She loves that serve out wide,” Orban said. “When she hits it, it's a tough serve.”
That serve may come in handy today against District 1’s fifth-ranked Lady Eagles.
CGA defeated the Lady Tigers  4-1 eight days ago in Warsaw, but they’ll face a different squad this time around.
In the regular-season finale for Warsaw, Orban threw out an entirely different lineup, where Sasso played 1 singles, Boyle was at 2 and Rachel Alexander played 3.
The doubles courts were also mismatched.
“The lineup was totally different,” Orban said. “One doubles needs to get its confidence back, because they won last time we played (CGA). Sarah (Hartle) will be hard to beat. Their 1 singles player is very good. Their 2 singles player is very good. Their 3 singles player is very good and they 2 doubles team is very good. They're a strong team.
“It's another level,” he added. “It truly is. It's going to be an interesting match. I need to figure out how to get three points.”
