AKRON - After his No. 2 singles player picked up her first win of the season Monday, Warsaw tennis coach Rick Orban said some momentum is exactly what Anushri Gokhale needed.
Momentum is what was on Gokhale's side as she defeated Lindsey Stavedahl of Kosciusko County rival Tippecanoe Valley.
Of the five varsity matches Monday afternoon, only the No. 2 singles match went to a third set, as the Tigers left Akron with a 5-0 team win.
Stavedahl won the first set 6-4, but it was if losing that set woke Gokhale up, setting off an alarm.
Gokhale came back and won the second and third sets 6-2, 6-0, completing the five-match sweep for the Tigers, who improved to 3-3 on the season.
"Anushri got her first win of the season," said Orban. "She's been playing No. 1 singles, but we moved Alicia Swank over from doubles to No. 1 singles. (Gokhale) has got a beautiful stroke. It was good for her to get her first win under her belt. This will be good for her confidence."
In the fourth match of the afternoon to finish, Warsaw seniors Tarissa Martin and Sara Whitehead defeated Jamie Weovet and Kelsey Kitch 6-3, 7-5 in No. 2 doubles action.
At No. 1 doubles, Tiger sophomore Erin Coppes teammed with senior Jill Harrison to defeat Valley's duo of Andrea Kindig and Maribeth Martin 6-1, 6-1.
The No. 1 doubles match was the first match to be completed.
In No. 1 singles action, Swank, a four-year varsity player, defeatd Valley's Brooke Prater 6-2, 6-1.
At No. 3 singles, Warsaw's Vanessa Aguilar defeated Sheena Reed 6-3, 6-3.
"I'm proud of the kids," said Orban. "We're improving every match, every practice. As soon as you see the improvement, though, you see girls get hurt. But the girls played well tonight."
Warsaw, a team that won a regional championship for the fourth straight year last season, has nine freshmen listed on its roster.
On top of that, the Tigers were without senior doubles player Gabby Schlitt and sophomore singles player Lauren Piper Monday because of injuries.
Warsaw is in action again tonight at Northern Lakes Conference opponent Elkhart Memorial and then again Thursday when it hosts rival Wawasee.
The Vikings are in action again Wednesday when they host Glenn.
