In the words of Jan Soyez, Warsaw's girls basketball program is going to be "first to be first again."

The first team to win a state championship, beating Bloomfield 57-52 in 1976, the Warsaw Tigers were also the first team to win a second state championship, beating Jac-Cen-Del 75-60 in 1978.

Now, the Tigers will be the first girls team to be inducted as a whole into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Both the 1976 and 1978 Warsaw girls teams will be inducted ino the Hall of Fame Saturday evening at Primo Banquet Hall in Indianapolis.

"They passed a resolution where teams that went undefeated and won state, the whole team goes into the Hall of Fame," said Soyez, who coached both the aforementioned Warsaw teams to 22-0 records. "It's quite an honor, and I know the girls are quite thrilled about it. We're going to be first to be first again."

Soyez, who is already in the Hall of Fame as an individual, coached the Tigers the first three years girls basketball was sanctioned by the IHSAA, compiling a 55-3 record. In the 10 years overall she coached at Warsaw, her teams were 117-15.

Other former Lady Tigers in the Hall of Fame as individuals are Judi Warren, the state's first Miss Basketball and first mental attitude award winner, and 1978 Miss Basketball Chanda Kline.

Prior to the induction and dinner in Indianapolis, the inductees will go to the Hall of Fame in New Castle Saturday afternoon.

Also being inducted as players on either the 1976 or 1978 team (names listed are their maiden name) are Anita Folk, Cindi Ross, Leissa Waggoner, Margie Lozier, Judy Reed, Cathy Folk, Marcia Miller, Kelly Smith, Cheryl Kachlik, Lori Neville, Lisa Vandermark, Kim Rockey, Leona Bruce, Lynn Galichus, Renee Wildman, Cherly Sands, Sue Loher, Pam Busenberg, Pam Shively, Claudia Kreicker and Pam Teeple.
