Warsaw Takes 6th Straight Golf Sectional Title
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
To say the least, Saturday's Warsaw Boys Golf Sectional at Rozella Ford was one full of emotion.
On one end there was Tiger coach Bob Turner, his team winning its sixth consecutive title and his son winning a playoff hole to capture second place individually.
On the other end there was Roger Moriarty, whose Tippecanoe Valley team advanced to state last year but failed to make it out of Saturday's sectional.
The Tigers shot a round of 313 to garner the sectional championship, topping county rival Wawasee by one stroke.
Turner's son, junior Aaron Turner, shot an 18-hole round of 74 to tie with Valley senior Brian Love. Turner then topped Love on the first hole of a sudden death playoff.
"It's always fun to win," Bob Turner said. "To see my son win a playoff match like that makes it extra special."
Following Warsaw and Wawasee were Culver Military Academy (318), Valley (326), Northfield (331), Plymouth (338), Bremen (351), Manchester (354), Triton (356), Southwood (369), Argos (376), Wabash (386) and Culver Community (413).
The top three teams and the top three individuals not on an advancing team will play in Friday's regional at Chestnut Hills in Fort Wayne.
Wawasee sophomore Stephen Conrad took medalist honors after his round of 70, followed by Turner and Love.
Saturday's sectional was billed as one that could be won by any of the three Kosciusko County schools - Warsaw, Wawasee and Valley.
For Warsaw and Wawasee, the day went as planned, as far as advancing to Friday's regional.
For Valley, things were as dreary as the day itself.
After being tied at 158 with Warsaw and Wawasee after nine holes, Valley turned in final scores of 85 for Drew Shafer, 92 for Aaron Zolman, and 93 for Anthony Domenico.
Shafer, Valley's No. 1 golfer and a senior, finished sixth in the state as an individual a year ago.
"I can't tell you what Drew Shafer has meant to our program for four years," Moriarty said. "It's disappointing to see him shoot an 85. Our fifth man, Aaron Zolman, shot a 92, and we had to count that score. It's disapointing, but I am tickled to death for Brian and Andy. Brian shot a 35 on the back nine and had his career-best round. Andy is a seasoned veteran. To shoot a shoot a 75 in conditions like these is impressive."
Turner was just as suprised at Valley's high team score.
"I was little suprised about their score," Turner said of the Vikings. "I've been in that situation before, making it to state and trying to get back. I know how Roger feels. I'd like nothing more than to beat him, but he's one of my best golfing buddies, so I like to travel with him and his team too."
To go with Turner's 74, Warsaw got a 76 from Adam Johnson, 81 from David Slater, 82 from Greg Clay and 83 from Matt Osbeck.
After Conrad's 70, Wawasee's card read like this: Justin Rider 75, Josh Abrams 88, Joel Bickel 77 and Kyle Lundy 82.
