Cold weather caused the meet to be moved twice last week, but once it took place, the Warsaw Tigers returned home with a 113-72 boys win and a 101-85 win on the girls side.[[In-content Ad]]The wins were one both Tiger squads needed, having come off back-to-back losses to Concord and Northridge, the top two teams in the Northern Lakes Conference.
"Concord and Northridge are pretty tough, but this is a pretty good meet for the girls to swim," Warsaw coach Terry Aukeman said. "It was kind of coming down to the last relay. So, we really had to push ourselves today."
The Warsaw girls really got a foothold on the meet with a first and second place finish by sophomore Kayla Hutcherson and junior Rachel Haller, respectively, in the 500 free. The performances helped turn a 58-52 advantage into a commanding 70-56 lead.
"I knew we could score some points in the 500 free," Aukeman said. "I moved some people around, accordingly, and it was nice to score the points there."
On top of winning the 500 free, Hutcherson also won the 200 free, while also being a part of the winning 200 free relay, along with Claire Wack, Jenna Moore and Marisa Vogel. She also joined Vogel, Leah Moore and Audrey Petro on the winning 400 free relay team, giving her a night with four first-place finishes.
Despite losing the meet, the Lady Warriors had the best swimmer in the water with freshman Brittany Robinson.
On top of taking part on the winning 200 medley relay along with Carolyn Gingerich, Andrea Huston and Nicole Smoker, Robinson also won the 50 free and 100 fly.
Having not lost an individual event this year, the freshman is one of the favorites to win her two events at this week's NLC Championships at Concord High School.
"It will be close," Wawasee first-year coach Julie Robinson, and the mother of Brittany, said. "Northridge has a really good swimmer, and they battled it out in the 100 fly. In the 50 free, it's anyone's game. It's whoever has the best start, best swim and best finish."
When Northridge and Wawasee squared off this year, Robinson actually out-touched the Raiders' Annie Cohoat with a time of 58.14 in the 100 fly. That 58.14 would give Robinson the state's 12th fastest time.
"I know 50 free-wise, she's gotta be one or two," Aukeman said of where Robinson ranks in the NLC. "Then, 100 fly-wise, she's gotta be one or two, but the butterfly in our conference is really difficult. Leah Moore, our butterfly swimmer, swims a 1:02, and she might not make top six. In years past, a 1:02 might win it. There's a lot of really good butterfly swimmers in our conference. There's probably four, maybe five, that can break a minute."
The NLC prelims take place Thursday at 5:30 p.m., with the swimming finals set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
"We'll have to see how the girls react, having swum Saturday (against Northridge), swimming today and then swimming Thursday," Aukeman said about his girls.
On the boys side of things, Warsaw senior Brian Thallemer led his team with two individual first-place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 back, while also joining Max Revere, Andrew Cutshall and Mitchell Gauger on the winning 400 free relay squad.
The Tigers also performed very well at the meter dive, where all three guys broke the 200-point barrier. Ben Rankin led the way with a 247.55, followed by Ryan Hepler's 226.45 and Michael Boyle's 208.85.
For Wawasee, Jake Garner placed first in the 100 fly and 500 free, and also joined Robert Smith, Caleb Buyer and John Kirkwood on the winning 200 medley relay team.
The next time in the boys get back in the pool is Jan. 29 for the NLC Championships, which will be back at Wawasee Middle School, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
