Warsaw Swimmers Sink Goshen

The Warsaw boys and girls swim teams' toughest tests Saturday in a Northern Lakes Conference meet with Goshen came from teammates.

The Tiger boys won handily, 147-36, over the Redskins as Warsaw won every event and swept the top three spots several times.

The Warsaw girls had little trouble in a 119-65 win over Goshen with wins in eight of the 12 events.

Warsaw head swim coach Terry Aukeman knew the Goshen meet would be a tough one to motivate his kids.

Due to a lack of experienced swimmers for the Redskins, especially on the boys end, Warsaw was a stone-cold lock to win.

The key for the Tigers was to get something out of it.

"It's tougher to motivate them in meets like this but they did a good job," said Aukeman. "To swim as well as they did for the middle of the season, I'm very happy with it."

Highlighting the boys' day was senior Nate Taylor. Taylor, who will swim for Purdue next year, won the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke while being part of the winning 200 medley relay team.

Taylor won state last year in the breaststroke and is poised to do so once again.

"Nate is a little bit faster at this point of the season then he was last year," said Aukeman. "Today we swam him in the 500 freestyle and it was his fastest time ever."

Taylor won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:50.48 to lap teammate Alex VanDuyne, who finished in second place with a time of 5:27.75.

Senior Kyle Marose picked up two wins for the Tigers in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly.

Sophomore Keaton Petro also picked up a pair of wins for Warsaw in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle and comprised one fourth of the 200 freestyle relay team that won with a time of 1:36.32

Petro leads a talented core of underclassmen that are poised to, if not replace, fill in quite capably for seniors like Taylor and Marose.

"We have guys coming in who are getting experience and they're ready to step in and fill in a lot of holes," said Aukeman.

On the girls side, Warsaw wasn't as dominant as a team but had some dominant individual performances comparable to the boys.

Melissa Dick won in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.

Dick was also a member of the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams that won for the Tigers.

Katy Taylor won in the 200 IM with a time of 2:23.81, which was nearly 10 seconds better than the second-place time of Goshen's Caitlin Short.

While Aukeman is pleased with how his boys squad is using youth to its advantage, he is pleased with how experienced leaders are stepping up for the girls.

Led by seniors Bethany Bayne,Stacey Keough, Lindsay Munsch and Dick, the Tigers are poised for the sort of success that last year led to a sectional championship.

For a sectional repeat to happen, Warsaw must first pass perhaps its biggest pre-postseason test.

The Tigers are gearing up for Christmas break, which for most high schoolers means parties and the traditional holiday caloric binge. For the boys and girls of the Warsaw swim team it means long practices to gear up for the second part of the season.

"We're getting closer to the break," said Aukeman. "Once we get there, we're going to tear them down a bit and try and build their toughness."
