Warsaw Swimmers Fall To NLC Foe Northridge

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Feeling the effects of having nine swimmers missing from the competition, Warsaw’s boys swim team lost 129-56 to visiting  Northridge Thursday night.
The Lady Tigers also lost their Northern Lakes Conference match with the Lady Raiders, falling 138-47.
Warsaw head coach Anthony DeBrota said the nine swimmers were missing for different reasons; some have been ill, while others were held out for disciplinary reasons. As a result, he had to shuffle the lineup “quite a bit.”
“Obviously we didn’t have a full lineup. For the relays we only had two (teams),” DeBrota said. “We had a lot of guys that were swimming events they don’t normally swim; a lot of guys were able to step up to the challenge, and that was great. It definitely gives me an idea of where we can put these new guys, and that’s what I told them, ‘we’ve got a lot of seniors that are going to be out for this meet, and it’s going to give us an idea of what we can do next year.’
“The younger guys saw the intensity that can come with this conference, both good and bad. Good because now  they have an idea of what they need to do to; bad because they might have been a little unprepared, but they’re also the freshmen and sophomores, and they still have the time to grasp what they need to do and what we can do to get better.”
In the boys meet, the lone Tiger victory came from junior Matt Wildman in the 100-yard freestyle. He also grabbed a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke. Senior Josh Miller captured second in both the 100 butterfly and the 100 freestyle.
Tiger divers Liam McCarrick, Tyler Paseka and Nick Bell finished second, third and fourth, respectively. The 200 medley relay team of Miller, Wildman, Mason Metzinger and Adam Doyle finished second in 1:49.87.
Brenna Morgan recorded the lone Lady Tiger individual win in the 50 freestyle, and missed a another victory in the 100 freestyle by one-tenth of a second. Morgan Price finished third in the 100 freestyle, Erin Sandberg third in the 50 freestyle, and Lauren Kuhl was third in the 100 backstroke.
DeBrota said his teams may have been a bit intimidated by the quality of competition.
“Both sides, mentally was our biggest issue here. We had a couple of people who weren’t able to swim. I don’t know if it was the fact that the routine was changed up, or the yardage we had this week, but it wasn’t our best meet, and it’s time to put it behnd us,” he said. “We still had good times; not everybody dropped, but that’s not the goal. Unfortunately, we had some people gain time, but that happens.
“With Zionsville coming up next week, that’s really where our focus is now. We’ve got four meets coming up in eight days, so we’ve got that mid-season rest coming up, then see what we can get for Zionsville, I know the other kids are excited about that as well, and they’re ready to get moving forward again.”
Before the meet with Zionsville on the Dec. 20, Warsaw will travel to Goshen on Saturday, host Plymouth on Dec. 16, and visit Elkhart Memorial, with diving on Wednesday and swimming on Thursday.
