Celebrating Senior Night for six members of the Warsaw volleyball team (19-6), the emotions took a swing after the Huntington North Lady Vikings (18-10) jumped out to a two-game lead, but the Lady Tigers fought back to win in five, 20-25, 26-28, 25-23, 25-20, 15-8.
As usual on a Senior Night, Warsaw went with a different starting lineup, which left three of its top players on the bench in the opening game, as juniors Jamie Lacheta, Alex Sanchez and sophomore Emily Poe watched from the sidelines.
"We didn't even want to give up the first game," Warsaw coach Mike Howard said. "We feel like our seniors are good enough players, that they've stepped in and done well. Kaylee (Shull has) stepped in with her serving, swinging and digging balls at different times throughout the year, and so has Sarah Heagy. They're very competent players.
"Those kids have all demonstrated that they deserve to be on the court and try to get that first game. It didn't work out for them, but I was happy they were on the court being able to play."
Even when Howard went with his standard lineup, his team still failed to win Game 2, even after leading 26-25.
"(Huntington North coach) Jamie (Craft has) got a really good team coming back next year, and they play in a very difficult conference," Howard said about Huntington North, which played just two seniors. "They're in a conference with Muncie Central, New Castle and a bunch of 4A powerhouses. Her kids are playing club ball and just doing all the right things to be a good program."
Howard's girls have been doing the same things, and it paid off when they were knotted at 23-23 in Game 3, just two points away from being swept.
Instead of seeing their night end there, senior Stephanie Shuter posted a kill and the Lady Tigers then benefited from a net violation, winning the game and closing to within 2-1 in the match.
Over the course of the next two games, Warsaw trailed just once, at 2-1 in Game 4, leading to a good feeling at the end of the night.
"Volleyball is such a game of momentum and rhythm, and sometimes the smallest thing can affect that," Howard said.
Lacheta and Poe led the Lady Tigers' attack with 17 and 13 kills, respectively, while Nulf posted 11 herself, supplying an inside presence Howard has been wanting.
"It was nice to see us feed the middle a little bit more tonight," he said. "Jamie got a handful of swings, but Nicole really came through and made some great plays. Particularly in the fifth game, when she came up with two or three kills, at least, in that game. We keep trying to push our middles. We're an outside-dominant team, sometimes, based on ball control and because Jamie's a load to handle."
Defensively, Sanchez posted a match-high 21 digs in only four games, while freshman Katie Voelz finished with a team-high four blocks and junior Chloe Hubner posted 48 assists.
Warsaw closes out its Northern Lakes Conference season Thursday at Concord before traveling south to the Clinton Prairie Invitational, and then north to take on Class 4A No. 2 Penn Monday night. After that, it's time for sectional play.
"It's that push to get to the end of the season right now," Howard said. "Our benchmark is out there (with Class 4A No. 3 Elkhart Memorial). We played Memorial tough earlier in the season, but that was a long time ago. They're different, we're different."
