Warsaw Spikers Escape Wawasee
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Warsaw was within three points of an easy three-game win over county and Northern Lakes Conference rival Wawasee in volleyball action at the Tiger Den Thursday night.
The visiting Warriors had different ideas.
Wawasee improved its serve reception and used its height advantage to push the contest to five games before falling 25-18, 25-13, 23-25, 20-25, 15-6.
The Warriors jumped out to a 6-4 lead in the fifth set. Warsaw picked up a side-out to make it 6-5. The Tigers' Danielle DeGeeter then served for 10 straight points to carry her team to the win.
DeGeeter led the Tigers in the win with 15 serving points.
"Danielle's serving of 10 straight points was key," said Warsaw head coach Doug West. "We had some good serving from (DeGeeter) tonight."
The Warriors' struggle during DeGeeter's run with serve reception was magnified. It's what lost Wawasee the first two games and won it the third and fourth.
Wawasee looked out of rhythm, as the Tigers became more aggressive and placed shots in tough places for the Warriors to get them.
The Tigers nearly closed out the match in the third game but fell behind late 24-23 and fell 25-23.
Warsaw led 16-14 at one point in the third game before the Warriors reeled off four straight points and never looked back.
Wawasee's run was kick started by a spike from sophomore Megan Hadley.
Things got interesting when after a timeout in the third game, officials decided that Wawasee didn't properly substitute its libero and was docked a point while Warsaw was granted a point and the serve.
The Warriors remained resilient and went on a 5-1 run before winning the game 25-23.
"They don't quit," said Wawasee head coach Amy Miller. "It's too bad it fell on three players' shoulders to get it done. That's a lot of pressure."
Wawasee pushed the match to five games with an impressive fourth game that saw the Warriors grab all the momentum and lead Warsaw by as much as nine points at 20-11.
The Tigers made things interesting as they went on 5-0 run to close the gap. Miller called a timeout leading 22-16 to calm her team down. The Warriors had lost their edge but still escaped with a 25-20 win.
Warsaw won the first game 25-15 with some key play by senior Kim Clay. Clay racked up a couple of aces and several kills to lead the Tigers in game one.
Clay was the leader in kills for Warsaw with seven and also had three blocks and nine service points.
Fellow senior Tasia Smith was also effective in game one in both serving and attacking.
Smith, who uses a jump serve, had an ace to put the Tigers up 17-15 and spark an 8-1 run for the win in game one.
Smith finished with six kills, two blocks and 13 service points.
