Warsaw Softball Team Leads Roundup With Win Over Memorial

The Warsaw softball team defeated its second potential sectional opponent in a row Monday, downing Northern Lakes Conference for Elkhart Memorial 8-6 at the Tigers Athletic Complex.
The Lady Tigers downed Elkhart Central 5-3 Saturday in Elkhart, snapping a five-game skid, but have begun to turn things around with two-straight victories.
Against Memorial, Warsaw jumped out the gates with five runs in the bottom of the first, and held on the rest of the way to improve to 5-9 overall and 4-3 in the NLC.
Kaleigh Speicher went the distance for Warsaw, striking out seven in the complete-game victory.
Speicher was just as good at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
Karly Jones led Warsaw with two RBIs and eight of the 10 girls that played scored a run.
Warsaw returns to NLC action Wednesday, travelling to Wawasee, a team it defeated 3-1 on April 21 at home.

Monday in Syracuse
The Wawasee softball team dropped an Northern Lakes Conference home game Monday, falling 2-0 against Concord. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak by the Lady Warriors, who now sit at 11-6 overall and 3-4 in the NLC. Against Concord, the Lady Warriors got just three hits and were struck out 11 times, while Wawasee freshman Meghan Fretz struck out eight Concord batters and gave up only three hits in the complete-game effort. Wawasee will look to even its conference mark up Wednesday at home against Warsaw, a team it defeated 3-1 on April 21 in Warsaw.

Hosting New Prairie Monday, the Triton softball team fell 2-1. In a matchup of two of the top pitchers in the Northern State Conference, Triton struck out 11 times against New Prairie’s Brandee Pietrzak, while Triton’s Mallorie Jennings had five strikeouts in the complete-game loss. On top of pitching seven innings, Jennings also had three hits of her own. The loss drops Triton to 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the NSC. Up next for the Lady Trojans is tonight’s home NSC game against John Glenn, a team Triton defeated 5-3 on April 23 in Walkerton.

Junior twins Kaelyn Mason and Kylie Mason won at Nos. 1 and 3 singles, respectively, while Triton’s other point came at No. 1 doubles, where Holly Stogsdill and Carrie Slabaugh were victorious. The Lady Trojans travel to Knox today for a Northern State Conference match.
