Only one Riley starter failed to get on base in a 18-2 win at Warsaw Monday night.
Riley sent 10 ladies to the plate in each of the first two innings, scoring five runs in each stanza and securing the victory.
In spite of the lopsided score, Warsaw coach Kevin Dishman said he understands his team needs experience, and used the season opener as more of an evaluation session more than anything.
“It’s a learning process for the girls. We wanted to see what we had,” Dishman said. “We did some good things, and we made some poor decisions at times.
“A lot of these girls have no real varsity experience. That being said, I was pleased. We’ve got something to work on now, and that’s what I was looking for.”
Among the bright sports for Warsaw was Sarah Shoemaker, who doubled in the first inning.
Kaitlyn Williams, Heather Cox, Ashley Gamble and Sidney Hernandez all collected base hits for the Lady Tigers, with Taylor Stiver and Cox scoring runs.
While Warsaw had fewer bright spots than Riley, Dishman said his first game as head coach of the Lady Tigers was more about beginning the journey.
“I’m not disappointed at all. We’ll come back tomorrow and work on it. Since they have no (junior varsity), we were able to bring quite a few girls up from our JV, and get them in the game,” Dishman said.
“But you know what? You can’t win a state championship in the first game. We’re alright.”
