Warsaw Soccer Team Inching Closer To NLC Title

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Coach Scott Bauer has no desire to share the Northern Lakes Conference championship.
Bauer's Class 2A seventh-ranked Warsaw boys soccer team took another step toward outright NLC title Thursday evening when it beat the visiting Goshen Redskins 2-0.
With their seventh shutout of the season, the Tigers improved to 11-3-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play.
Goshen fell to 9-4 and 2-3.
Warsaw, the only remaining team with an unblemished NLC record, plays at Wawasee Saturday and at Northridge Thursday. Both Concord and Northridge have one conference loss.
"We have to make sure we take care of business at Wawasee Saturday," said Bauer, whose team has outscored its conference opponents 20-2 this season. "We need to play with a lot of purpose. I think we'll be focused. We don't want to share the conference championship with Concord or Northridge."
In their latest win, which came two days after a 2-0 home loss to Class 1A No. 1 Fort Wayne Canterbury, the Tigers got two first-half goals from senior Corey Lopez.
Lopez scored what turned out to be the game-winner in the 24th minute, and then added an insurance goal one minute later.
Both goals were assisted by senior José Rodriguez.
Lopez, who has scored 19 goals this season, upped his school record for goals in a career to 63. With his 12th assist this year, Rodriguez upped his record for assists in a career to 33.
"When you've got a midfielder like José, who can get in space and play intelligent balls to Corey, who is an excellent finisher, good things are going to happen," said Bauer. "That was the difference between the two sides tonight. I have two extremely good finishers."
The draw for the 18th annual boys soccer state tournament will be held Monday.
The Tigers will host the sectional, which begins the week of Oct 3.
