Warsaw Sinks Rival Wawasee

Excessive rain postponed the Wawasee-Warsaw swim meet a day, but once it did take place Wednesday, it was the Tigers that were pouring it on.

In the Northern Lakes Conference meet at Warsaw, the Tiger boys and girls were both victors, winning 111-75 and 121-62, respectively.[[In-content Ad]]"It's a Wawasee-Warsaw meet, it's usually a real good meet," Warsaw coach Terry Aukeman said. "We swam very well. I was real happy with the guys and girls, all around. I wasn't expecting a score like we had. It was a nice win for us, because the boys haven't beaten them in four or five dual meets."

Wawasee coach Roger Karns was also surprised with the outcome, feeling his team didn't have the fire it need to induce a more competitve meet.

"I really expected it to be a closer meet than that," he said. "We came out really flat tonight, and I really don't have an explanation for that. We've got to be sharper than that when we swim against a quality opponent like Warsaw."

By the time each squad was set to swim its seventh event, the Warsaw boys already had control with a 47-31 score, and the girls had an even tightier grip, leading 50-25.

"We're really starting to come together on both teams," Aukeman said of his boy and girls. "The girls are really stepping up and filling some holes, because last year, we graduated quite a few girls. Having girls start to fill in those holes is making the team come around to where I thought it would be."

Among those girls stepping up are freshmen Marissa Vogel and Leah Moore. Against Wawasee, Vogel took first place in the 200 (2:11.34) and 500 free (5:55.53), while also leading off the winning 400 free relay (4:09.39), along with Kayla Hutcherson, Nicole Kuhn and Karli Slater. Moore also had a good night, winning the 200 IM (2:27.09) and 100 fly (1:08.57) to go with her participation in the winning 200 free relay (1:51.03), joined by Hutcherson, Vogel and Audrey Petro.

"The juniors and seniors, I knew what I was going to get out of them," Aukeman said. "So with some of the freshmen and sophomores stepping in has been good."

Matching Vogel's four first-place finish night, Petro, a sophomore, anchored the winning 200 free and 200 medley relays, also winning the 50 (26.96) and 100 free (57.76) events.

Another four-event winner was Max Revere for the Warsaw boys. On top of anchoring the 200 free (1:38.43) and 400 free (3:34.25) relays, the junior also won the 200 free (1:54.78) and 100 free (51.73).

The Wawasee boys did win five events, but it wasn't enough to get a win or a big smile on Karns' face.

"Tyler Wear had a nice IM and backstroke, Robert Smith swam well, but overall, not a lot of high points," he said.

Smith was the anchor of the Warriors' winning 200 medley relay (1:44.33), along with Wear, Jacob Haneline and Jake Garner, to go with his first-place finish in the 100 fly (1:01.60). Wear was also a winner in the 200 IM (2:05.79) and took second in the 100 back (56.17), which was won by Warsaw's Brian Thallemer (54.96). That backstroke event was one of special interest for Aukeman.

"The backstroke with Brian Thallemer and Tyler Wear has always been a good matchup over the years," the Warsaw coach said.

The meet was one of the last before the Northern Lakes Conference Championships begin. The championships will begin Jan. 19, when the girls travel to Concord. The boys will compete at Wawasee Middle School on Jan. 24.

"I've been happy with their progress until tonight," Karns said. "We just weren't on our game. We have to sharpen it back up before we go to the championships."

To get back on their game, Karns has a simple approach.

"I only know one solution to most swimming problems - that's practice harder," he said.

At the conference championships, Aukeman is aware of the top teams, but believes his squads can have a good showing.

"Northridge is pretty dominate with both teams, and the Concord girls and boys are probably right underneath them," he said. "For us, third place or fourth place would be pretty realistic. Conference, I really try to use that as a warm-up for sectional, telling them, 'This is probably the events you'll swim in at sectionals, so let's get to what we need to for sectional,'."

Prior to any championship meets, both teams will be back in NLC action Saturday. Warsaw will be at Northridge, while the Warriors will play host to the Plymouth Pilgrims. Diving for each meet begins at 9:15 a.m.
