DUNLAP - If there was any question about the outcome of Thursday's Northern Lakes Conference boys track meet at Concord High School, it wasn't who would win but the margin of victory.

As expected, Warsaw ran away with it and won the NLC outright for the fourth consecutive year. The Tigers took first with a score of 168, 54 points ahead of second-place Concord. Wawasee finished third with 101, followed by NorthWood (75), Plymouth (67), Northridge (50) and Goshen (42).

"I'm proud of the fact that we won four outright championships in a row," said fifth-year Warsaw coach Troy Akers, who was voted Coach of the Year. "We won 29 consecutive dual and triangular meets, and our seniors never lost."

On a night a steady rain fell much of the meet, Warsaw took first in five of the evening's 16 events. Winners of each event are automatically named to the all-conference list. Locals named to the at-large list were Warsaw's Jon Dock and NorthWood's Andy Yoder. Abe Almager (NorthWood), Andy Popenfoose (Wawasee) and Ryan Hill (Warsaw) were named to the honorable mention list.

Tiger senior Jarod Leasure won the discus event for the third consecutive year, this time with a throw of 156 feet. Almager finished fourth, while Warsaw's Ryan Brennan was sixth, NorthWood's Josh Sabo seventh and Wawasee's Phil Mallane eighth.

"Three conference championships in a row, what do you say," Akers said of Leasure. "He's just done an incredible job for us."

Junior Adam Bott took first in the long jump for the Tigers with a leap of 21-2 1/2. Teammate Arnell Frantz was fourth, while NorthWood's Willy Will was sixth and Wawasee's Derek Sweazy seventh.

To go with two first-place finishes in the field events, the Tigers tallied three seconds and two thirds.

"When you score a bunch of points in the field events, you're off to a good start," Akers said. "We were able to score two in all the field events, that's a credit to our depth."

Junior Brad Seiss took second in the high jump, while Frantz was third. Senior Brent Satterly was second in the shot put, while Leasure was third. Senior Cory Gackenheimer finished second in the pole vault.

Warsaw's other three firsts came from Seiss in the 200 (23.20 seconds), Adam Sisson in the 400 (50.79 seconds) and the 1600 relay team of Chris Clay, Seiss, Grady Randall and Sisson (3:28.0).

Wawasee had three first-place finishes, while NorthWood had two.

Senior Jimmy Meyer won the shot put for the Warriors with a distance of 50 feet.

Senior Rob Chalfant won the 1600 in a time of 4:33.07 and the 3200 with a time of 10:00.56. The 3200 championship was the third consecutive for Chalfant, who plans to run cross country and track at Purdue University next year.

NorthWood's two firsts came from Scott Hill in the 100 (11.27 seconds) and the 400 relay team of Ben Lehman, Casey Yerger, Joey Sheets and Hill (44.9 seconds).

Warsaw, Wawasee and NorthWood will compete in Thursday's Goshen Sectional.
