Warsaw Shoots Best Round Of Season, Beats Manchester

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

NORTH MANCHESTER – First-year coach Tad Nieter can't help but smile when talking about the improvement his Warsaw girls golf team has made this season.
He certainly had reason to smile Thursday evening, as the Lady Tigers beat the Manchester Lady Squires 177-206 at Sycamore Golf Club in North Manchester.
With each team using the match as a final tuneup before their respective conference tournament Saturday, Warsaw beat its previous best nine-hole team score of the season by 15 strokes.
In doing so, three Warsaw players shot the best nine-hole score of their career, as Madi Graham took medalist honors with a 1-over 37, while Page Desenberg carded a 44 and Morgan Fuentes a 45.
The Lady Tigers’ other two varsity scores were a 51 by Madison Martz and a 57 by Delaney Wihebrink.
“I'm overly pleased,” said Nieter, whose team improved to 8-5 on the season. “We beat our season best by 15 strokes. We had three girls shoot their career-best score. We did really well today.”
Graham's previous best score was a 38 on a par-35 setup earlier this season.
“She was on fire,” Nieter said of Graham. “She was 1-under through seven (holes) and then bogeyed the last two. She did very well. I'm very pleased with her round. Heading into conference, that's perfect for her.”
The Lady Tigers, who finished the round robin portion of the Northern Lakes Conference schedule with a 4-3 record, will tee off at 9 a.m. in Saturday's NLC Tournament at Meadow Valley Golf Club in Middlebury.
Warsaw will host the sectional on its home course, Stonehenge, on Sept. 19.
“When I think about our first match, when we shot, I think, 221 and won by two shots or something like that, and tonight we shoot a 177, we've improved so much,” said Nieter. “We've shot in the 190s consistently ... so, a 30-shot improvement, that's huge. We just have to put it together for 18 holes, and we can be right there for conference and the sectional.”
Manchester was led Thursday by Kelsey Eichenauer's 48, while Madyson Ulrey and Lydia Little shot 51 and 52, respectively, and Madison Hire and Leiah Brandenburg each carded a 55.
“Our low for the year is a 204 last week,” said Manchester coach Josh Troyer, whose team fell to 8-7 on the season. “The last four rounds, we've been 210, 210, 204 and then 206. It was good overall. We've been playing a lot at Norwood to get ready for the TRC match and for the sectional.
“The green speeds were a little different tonight, a lot faster than what we've been used to, and that hurt us.”
The Lady Squires will play in the Three Rivers Conference Tournament Saturday. Action at Norwood Golf Club gets underway at 8:15 a.m.
“I'm happy where we're at,” said Troyer. “We're seeded fourth (for the TRC match) with our average. We're a young team. We've got a sophomore as our No. 1, freshmen as our No. 2 and 3, and then two juniors as our No. 4 and 5. I'm happy with where we're at. We're very talented. We have a lot of potential. We're very young right now.”
