NAPPANEE - As of Saturday morning, Warsaw's girls golf team was looking to accomplish two firsts in school history: finish undefeated and win the Northern Lakes Conference title outright.

After Saturday's NLC Tournament at McCormick Creek Golf Course, Warsaw will have to settle for finishing undefeated.

The Tigers entered the tournament 6-0 in the NLC, but the Tigers placed third in the seven-team match. Because the final NLC standings combine regular-season dual matches and the tournament, the third-place finish forced the Tigers to share the NLC title with Goshen.

While Warsaw has never won the NLC outright, the Tigers shared first place in 1995.

Plymouth, which went 3-3 and placed fourth during NLC regular-season matches, ran away with the tournament by firing a 361. Goshen shot a 371 for second place, while Warsaw shot a 378 and was followed by Concord with a 406, Northridge with a 434, Wawasee with a 437 and NorthWood with a 452. Goshen shared the NLC title with Warsaw by placing second with a 5-1 record in regular-season matches.

While Warsaw failed to claim sole possession of the title, finishing as a co-champion was enough for coach Bob Turner.

"I'm pleased the girls went through the round-robin 6-0, beating Plymouth at their place and Goshen away from home," the Warsaw coach said. "Our girls played their hearts out."

Plymouth No. 1 golfer Katie Flynn shot a 43 on the front nine and 38 on the back nine to win medalist honors with an 81. Warsaw No.1 golfer Kerri Wrobel placed second overall with an 86.

For Plymouth, No. 2 golfer Gretchen Heden shot an 87, No. 3 golfer Margie Kreigbaum a 95, No. 4 golfer Abby Keiser a 98 and No. 5 golfer Katie VanVactor a 103.

For Warsaw, No. 2 golfer Lara Reed shot a 93, No. 3 golfer Jaci Thallemer a 107, No. 4 golfer Erin Elliott a 95 and No. 5 golfer Katie Manning a 104.

The highest scores for each team were dropped.

After teams finished the front nine, Plymouth led with a 175, while Goshen had a 178 and Warsaw a 181. All seven teams shot worse on the back nine. Plymouth recorded a 186, Goshen a 193 and Warsaw a 197. Wrobel and Reed were consistent as Wrobel fired two 43s and Reed had a 48 and a 45, but McCormick's Creek challenging back nine got the best of the three other Tigers. Thallemer followed a 51 with a 56, Elliott a 43 with a 52 and Manning a 47 with a 57.

"The back nine took a toll on a few girls," Warsaw coach Bob Turner said. "Plymouth is an excellent team, and so is Goshen. Look at the records of the top four combined teams: 59-11."

Ashley Ward paced Wawasee with a 98.

Now Warsaw looks to accomplish its other first: going undefeated. The Tigers are at CGA on Tuesday and host West Noble on Thursday.
