Warsaw Sends 2 Wrestlers To State

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By Jen Gibson, Times-Union Sports Writer-

Warsaw wrestling coach Tony Boley has a simple equation to get to the state finals -Êwin five matches.

"In the sectional you have to win just one match, your first one, to advance," said Boley. "In the regional you have to win your first match and one of the next two because the top four advance. That's three must-win matches.

"In the semistate, you must win your first two if you are not the regional champion. That's five matches. Once you get into the sectional, you are just five wins away from state. It's pretty simple."

Two Warsaw wrestlers, Kyle Boley and Kris Hueber, followed Boley's advice and will compete in the state finals beginning tonight.

While both wrestlers are making their first trip to compete at the state level, their experiences will be different.

For Hueber, a senior, this is his first trip to the state meet as a competitor. However, he did visit Conseco Fieldhouse last year when he went down as Joey Navarro's wrestling partner.

"We took Kris down last year so he could see what it was like at Conseco," said Boley. "But he has been in some huge tournaments. He was in the finals at the Lake Central Invitational, last year he was in the finals at the Mishawaka Invitational and won. This year he got beat in the championship match at the Mishawaka Invitational. He's wrestled in a lot of finals."

Kyle Boley, on the other hand, is a freshman, and this will be his first experience at the state finals.

"It will be good for him to go down to Conseco as a freshman," said Tony Boley, Kyle's father. "It will be good for him to see what it's like. I've seen seniors go down there to Market Square Arena or now Conseco Fieldhouse, and they got in the place and their eyes got big. They never came down. They were so caught up in the excitement, they never really wrestled well."

Another thing Hueber and Kyle Boley have going for them is their support system. Although Warsaw was eliminated as a team in the regionals two weeks ago, most members of the team are still going to practice to help Hueber and Kyle Boley prepare for their big matches.

"I have never had this many kids at practice after the season was finished," said Tony Boley. "This is a great group of kids. They are fun to coach, and they are very supportive of each other."

While Tony Boley will be taking six wrestlers (Hueber, Boley, and their practice partners) down to Conseco Fieldhouse this weekend, all the Warsaw wrestlers will be in attendance to cheer their teammates on.

"Most of the guys are going to go down (to Indianapolis) with their dads just to cheer our guys on," said Tony Boley. "That says a lot about the members of our team."

The Warsaw duo will compete at the state finals beginning this evening at 6 p.m.

Manchester Downs Columbia City

By Jen Gibson, Times-Union Sports Writer

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊSince Manchester has fallen behind in each of its last two games, no one seemed worried when the Squires were down to Columbia City 25-19 at halftime of Thursday's boys basketball game.

However, Thursday was different because Manchester did not make a comeback against the Eagles and lost 57-45.

"I am disappointed with the fact that we didn't come out to play," said Manchester coach Gary Goshert. "I don't think we worked hard enough to stop anybody tonight, let alone Columbia City."

Manchester held the lead just once in the game when Klint Rupley was fouled when making a lay-up. He hit the free throw at the 5:50 mark in the first quarter to give Manchester a 3-2 lead.

Then Columbia City went on a 11-4 run to end the first quarter and took a 14-7 lead into the second frame.

In the second, the Eagles built their lead to as many as 13, but the Squires fought back. Nate Kerr and Rupley led a 6-0 run at the end of the first half to cut their deficit from 13 to six..

However, Columbia City hit two three-pointers to start the third quarter and restore its 12-point lead.

Columbia City was up by 14 with 3:05 left in the third quarter, but Manchester went on a 10-4 run to end the quarter and get back within eight, 39-31.

Kerr and Klay Bechtold scored the first two baskets of the fourth to cut the deficit to four, 39-35, but Columbia City refused to roll over.

At the 4:24 mark in the final quarter, Trevor Shively hit two free throws that started a 12-0 Eagles run.

Manchester did not score again until the 1:58 mark when Kerr sank a jumper from just inside the free throw line.

Kerr scored 10 of Manchester's 14 fourth-quarter points, but it was not enough to get the Squires out of the hole they build earlier in the game, and Columbia City came out on top 57-45.

Kerr led all scorers in the game with 22 points. He also grabbed two steals and five rebounds. Rupley was the only other Squire in double figures with 13 points.

Columbia City's Shively led the Eagle scoring attack with 19 points, while teammates Tim Schmitt and Bob Dye added 14 and 13 points respectively.

"Columbia City is as good a team as we have played in quite a while," said Goshert. "I have to give the credit, they excuted defensively. Offensively, they kicked it out and made their shots.

"They really took it to us."

Columbia City improves to 10-9, while Manchester falls to 11-7. The Squires will host Churubusco Tuesday.
