At the school board meeting Monday night, Superintendent Dr. Craig Hintz made the announcement that the half-day program will continue for the next school year. It will be offered at Washington STEM Academy.
At the April 22 board meeting, April Nelson was one of three parents who asked the board to continue to offer the half-day program. The parents were told that only nine students had enrolled in the half-day program by that meeting, and it would need 18 to 20 kindergartners to continue next school year.
Monday night, Nelson said the deadline to determine the half-day program’s fate was Friday and she wanted to know if a decision had been made.
With 15 solid enrollments for the half-day kindergarten program for 2013-14, Hintz said they were going to allow the half-day option.
“Great! Thank you!” Nelson replied.
This year, the half-day program had 20 kindergartners enrolled. Warsaw Community Schools is reimbursed $2,750 per student in half-day kindergarten, half the reimbursement WCS gets for a regular student.
Parents who want WCS to keep half-day kindergarten have a Facebook page titled “Warsaw Half-Day Kindergarten.”
In other business, the school board:
• Recognized Warsaw Community High School Student Council President Jeanette Sanchez for her service and monthly updates to the board.
• Recognized WCHS students Nikki Abel and Lauren Snodgrass. Abel earned a gold medal for photography in The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2013. Snodgrass earned a silver medal for mixed media in the art competition.
Recognized former Harrison Elementary School and Lakeview Middle School student Collin Jeffrey Parker for being accepted to West Point.
Recognized Syd Ellis, attendance officer, for 31 years of service to WCS.
“It’s been a wonderful job for me. Thank you very much,” Ellis told the board.
