Warsaw Schools Looks At Redistricting
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Warsaw School Board at its 7 p.m. meeting tonight will tackle the issue of redistricting and building new schools.
Several elementary schools in Warsaw Community Schools Corp. are at or near capacity: according to the latest enrollment figures, Harrison Elementary has 619 students, Eisenhower has 530 and Leesburg has 452.
At April's school board meeting, consultant Jerome N. McKibben, Ph.D., of Gann-McKibben Demographic Consulting, recommended the board close Jefferson, Atwood, Claypool and Silver Lake elementaries and build two new school buildings - one in Claypool and one in Prairie Township. He based his recommendation on student populations in specific areas and on projected population and demographic trends.
McKibben said the ideal size of a school would be between 300-600 students, and said, "It's not economically feasible to run an elementary school of less than 300 kids."
The most recent enrollment figures put Atwood at 136 students, Claypool at 162, Silver Lake with 154 and Jefferson with 306 students.
Board members made no comment and took no action on McKibben's report at April's meeting, but the topic is on the agenda for tonight, with a recommendation on schools to be closed, schools to be built and a schedule for both by superintendent Dr. David McGuire. Final action is scheduled for the June meeting.
Also to be discussed tonight: Warsaw Community Schools' financial position; a building capacity report by Jacque Brandenburg, principal of Atwood Elementary; the architect's design for the new projects on the Warsaw Community High School campus and the construction manager's update; and ratification of the Joint Service Agreement for the North Central Indiana Special Education Cooperative.
The Warsaw School Board meets at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month in the administration building. [[In-content Ad]]
