Warsaw Schools Looks at Costs of Cross Country Course

After the Warsaw School Board reviewed costs Tuesday of “necessary” items and “desired” items for a cross country course, an official proposal will be made to the board at its meeting Monday.

The course is to be constructed on the property recently purchased by Warsaw Schools west of Logan Road and west of Warsaw Community High School.

The cost is approximately $16,000 if it just includes necessary items, but $92,032 if it includes necessary and desired items.

Costs cover small items like permanent markers to bigger ticketed items like the creation of paths and removal of dead trees and saplings.

Information provided by WCHS Athletic Director Dave Anson states the funding sources for the course would come from the athletic budget and the corporation’s capital project fund.

The course could generate revenue from advertising and harvested timber.

Anson said he met with School Board Vice President Matt Dick and a conservation officer Friday and took a look at the property.

“We have $40,000 to $60,000 worth of timber in there,” Anson said.

“I’m real excited about getting a cross country course,” said Dan Metzger, board secretary. “I think it’s something we need.”

One of the desired items for the course is bleachers with an awards area. Metzger said he’s never seen bleachers at a cross country course before.

“Is it something we need? I hate to get too crazy. I’d like to see this thing get going,” Metzger asked.

The Logan Road location was a perfect spot for the course for now, Metzger said.

“I’m in favor of the track, not necessarily the bleachers,” said Jennifer Tandy, board president.

If Warsaw Schools decided to build a facilities on that property, Chief Financial Officer Kevin Scott said he and Director of Maintenance Greg Schroeder agreed a course could be adapted to go around the building.

Dan Robinson, board member, said he was OK with the necessary items to create a course.

Superintendent Dr. Craig Hintz told the board a final proposal would be brought to them for approval Monday, with an estimated cost around $15,000 to $16,000.[[In-content Ad]]
