Warsaw Schools Gets New Web Filter

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Warsaw Community Schools will be getting a new Web filter and save approximately $61,000 over a four-year period in the process.
Chief Technology Officer Brad Hagg presented the request to the school board Tuesday afternoon to purchase the filter from Lightspeed Systems. The board will be asked to approve it at its Monday night meeting.
“My staff has searched for four years for an Internet filter to replace what we have,” Hagg said.
Everyone agrees that they’re not satisfied with what WCS has now, he said. He looked at six to seven different products and had three or four other quotes.
The filter will not only filter what students are surfing online at school, but once WCS goes to 1-to-1, Hagg said it also will filter the devices wherever the students take them. In a 1-to-1 school, every student has their own laptop for educational uses at school and to take home.
The new filter also should help the Internet service at Warsaw schools run faster.
Hagg said he will recommend the board go with a multi-year agreement on the filter because they will be able to get a four-year deal for the cost of three years basically.
For a 48-month agreement, he said they will make four payments of $37,000, which amounts to a $61,800 savings.
“I think it’s a win-win,” Hagg said.
A server is included in the four-year deal.
At Monday’s meeting, the board also will be requested to approve statements regarding out-of-corporation transfer requests, as presented by Chief Financial Officer Kevin Scott.
The four statements include:
The Warsaw Board of School Trustees is not setting a building/grade level capacity because it intends to accept all student transfer requests.
The deadline for out-of-district transfer requests for the 2013-14 school year is set for May 29, 2014.
The board waives transfer tuition for all transfer students in grades kindergarten to 12th grade.
All out-of-district transfer students must apply on a yearly basis. Applications are available at each neighborhood school and the Educational Services Center. The building administrator and superintendent must approve the application prior to enrolling a child. Questions regarding the application process can be directed to the superintendent’s office.
Scott also gave the board a timeline for the 2014 budget.
On Aug. 20, after the board’s scheduled work session, there will be a budget study session beginning at 5 p.m. At the regular meeting Aug. 26, the board will be asked for permission to advertise the Notice to Taxpayers for the 2014 budget.
The required legal notices for the budget will be published Aug. 27 and Sept. 3. A public hearing on the budget will be Sept. 6 at 4 p.m., with official adoption of the 2014 budget on Sept. 16.[[In-content Ad]]
